Love Yourself Event- Coloring & DIY Self-Care

On Saturday, February 16th nearly a dozen AmeriCorps members, alums, and GRACC co-op residents came together for WMAC’s Love Yourself event. Participants enjoyed casual conversation while relaxing in the communal living space at GRACC’s charming and historic James Russell House. As soothing music filling the room, participants enjoyed coloring in adult coloring books, eating delicious snacks and desserts, and making DIY sugar scrubs and bath salts with essential oils. A few participants even donned facial masks to hydrate their skin while making their spa items. Those in attendance were entered in a door prize drawing for YMCA day passes, an aluminum water bottle, and several pedicure kits. At the end of the evening, participants left feeling rejuvenated, relaxed and excited to try out their DIY spa treatments to continue the self-care at home!

Position & Service Site
AmeriCorps Vista, serving as a Resource Development Coordinator at Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids

What you enjoy about your position?

I love having a wide range of responsibilities, from teaching employability skills to grant writing to connecting with community partners. Having my hand in so many types of responsibilities allows me to experience service from a more micro practice to macro practice. I also love that being a VISTA has allowed me to pursue so many professional interests outside of the work I do every day at Goodwill.

What or who inspired you to join Americorps?

My older sister served as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Minneapolis and would tell me about her experience and how it was the perfect stepping stone into a field that she would otherwise be under qualified for due to a lack experience. Graduating with a focus in the social work field, AmeriCorps was going to be right up my alley and give me experience while also giving me opportunities for professional development.

Something you love to do and or most people don't know about you?

I really love to cook, I’m always looking for new recipes to try out at home with friends. I also like to rock climb and hike when I can find time for it!

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

If I could travel anywhere I would go to Budapest, Hungary. There is so much beautiful architecture there and it is also very affordable which makes it very attractive to me as a VISTA! I also really want to visit Croatia sometime, more specifically the coast of Croatia.
