Member & Alumni Spotlight
Alex Rodriguez
Refugee Care Coordinator and Advocate, serving with Cherry Health at Bethany Refugee Services

What you enjoy about your position:

Making connections with people even if we don’t speak the same language, and just being a friendly face to someone who is in a country where they might not know anyone.
Also, making sure that the refugee population, that generally doesn’t get good healthcare, gets the type of care that everyone should be guaranteed makes me feel good about the work I do.

What or who inspired you to join AmeriCorps:

Cherry Health was an organization that gave me assistance when I was younger and giving back was something that I have wanted to do. But getting more involved in politics and seeing what type of impact we as a populous can make if we just cared more really made me want to do better not

just for myself or my family and friends, but all humans, and AmeriCorps was an avenue that I could do that. My partner, Bailey, is the one who got me interested in AmeriCorps through our passion to want to help people, it started as wanting to do the Peace Corps and ended with us both starting a service year for AmeriCorps.

Something you love to do and or most people don't know about you:
My Freshmen year of college I joined 5 clubs/organization and had 0 freetime – Delta Sigma Phi (2.5 yrs), Ping Pong Club (1 yr), GV Dance Troupe (3.5yrs), Smash Bros Club (2yrs), and the GV Men’s Volleyball Club (1 yr).

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go:
Japan is normally my answer because I love the culture so much but I really want to travel anywhere out of the country. The world is a interesting and mysterious place and going anywhere would bring new experiences and new relationships.

NPR's Tiny Desk Concert - Lizzo
Lizzo's third studio album, Cuz I Love You, brought her into the national spotlight. Her powerful voice, sense of humor, and unapologetic lyrics have captured the energy of other influential Black women artists like Missy Elliott, TLC, and Lauryn Hill.

Here at one of NPR's famous and intimate Tiny Desk Concerts, Lizzo performs her hits "Cuz I Love You," "Truth Hurts," and "Juice."
