Member & Alumni Spotlight
Alexa Girouard
AdviseMI College Adviser, Belding High School

What you enjoy about your position:

I love serving high school students and helping them navigate the college process. I enjoy having the opportunity to encourage students to reach for their highest potential for their post secondary path, whether that be trade school, apprenticeship, community college, or a university. My favorite part of my position is planning Michigan College Month events at my school, taking college field trips with students, and assisting first generation and low income students in taking down barriers to higher education through opportunities like the Tuition Incentive Program and completing the FAFSA application.

What or who inspired you to join AmeriCorps:

My first year in AmeriCorps, I served with AmeriCorps VISTA at Davenport University and Grand Rapids Public Schools doing College Access and Success. It was something I sort of fell into on accident. A wonderful friend of mine from Grand Valley, Kanyn Doan, applied to be a College Adviser with AdviseMI, but unfortunately I was too late to apply, so I ended up finding the position with AC VISTA. After my year with VISTA, I got a position with AdviseMI and I am now finishing up my third year as an AmeriCorps member, and I couldn't be more proud of the service I have done and the communities I have impacted. I have been so grateful for the amazing leadership I have experienced from my supervisors at AC VISTA, Davenport, AdviseMI/MCAN, and Belding, as well as my fellow college advisers at MCAN. They encouraged me to take my position at Belding High School and continue in a second year with AdviseMI. They have all constantly encouraged, supported, and guided me when I needed it most and left me with a whole network of people I can call colleagues and friends. I don't think I would have made it through my years of service without each one of these extraordinary groups of people.

Something you love to do and or most people don't know about you:
I'm a huge Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit fan!

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go:
My grandma is from Malta, so I would love to travel to there one day and experience it!

Resource of the Month:
Symphony Scorecard
Whether you're into classical composers like Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich, or want to see fan favorites like Ghostbusters with the backing of a live orchestra, the Grand Rapids Symphony has an impressive repertoire. And thanks to the Symphony Scorecard program, concerts like these don't have to be cost prohibitive.

Anyone who receives state assistance such as Medicaid or SNAP, or is in a military household, is eligible to participate in the program. All you have to do is get a card from one of many Symphony Scorecard partners, then call the GR Symphony Box Office (616.454.9451 x 4) with your card number and receive up to 4 FREE tickets to select performances (subject to availability).
