Member Spotlight

Beth Brandon
AdviseMI College Adviser at Plainwell High Schoo

What you enjoy about your position:

I enjoy serving students and learning about the goals they have for after they graduate high school. Being able to help them take the steps to get into a post-secondary institution, whether their goal is medical school or a certificate in electrical work for construction, has been a blast. There is a unique energy and sense of excitement as seniors work through their last year of high school and transition into something bigger. Seeing them grow throughout the year and gain more confidence in their choices and actions is really exciting and rewarding.

What or who inspired you to join AmeriCorps:

I’d started thinking about wanting to participate in service through AmeriCorps when my older brother served as a VISTA. It wasn’t until I was in graduate school and my friend, Autumn, and I were talking about AdviseMI that I realized I really wanted to serve. The way Autumn talked about serving her students and the impact service had on her, I knew I wanted to apply.

Something you love to do and or most people don't know about you:

I love to play and listen to music. I have been playing both the drums and guitar for over 12 years and it’s one of my favorite ways to process and take a mental break.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go:

There is a very long list, but I’ve always wanted to go to Chile and hike through a bunch of their national parks, like Archipelago Juan Fernandez National Park, Chiloe National Park, and Easter Island. There are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, beautiful and unique parks and hiking trails, and opportunities to experience history and culture through archaeology and paleontology, and I think it would just be an incredible experience.

What We're Into
Good Omens promo poster - Amazon original series
"Aziraphale and Crowley, of Heaven and Hell respectively, have grown rather fond of the Earth. So it's terrible news that it's about to end. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing. The Four Horsemen are ready to ride. Everything is going according to the Divine Plan...except that someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist. Can our heroes find him and stop Armageddon before it's too late?"

This long awaited series is based on the beloved novel by Neil Gaiman, creator of American Gods, Coraline, and the Sandman graphic novels, and the late Terry Pratchett, creator of many Discworld novels including Monstrous Regiment, The Colour of Magic, and Hogfather.
