Asian Pacific Fund Annual Gala - Celebrating Asian Amerian Leadership, Philanthropy and Community

Many Thanks for Your Incredible Support!

A heartfelt thank you to those who helped make this year’s gala an inspiring celebration of Asian American leadership, philanthropy and community. We are deeply grateful to the 460 guests who joined us to be part of the most well-attended gala in the Fund’s history, raising nearly $300,000 to support grants and services for organizations serving our most vulnerable community members.

We honored Steve Chen, co-founder of YouTube, with our Leadership in Philanthropy Award for serving as a role model for the next generation of Asian American philanthropists. Following a YouTube video tribute, journalist Jan Yanehiro conducted an intimate interview with Steve. He reflected on his life-changing experience with a brain aneurysm and shared, “No one wishes to have an undiscovered aneurysm. But at the end of it all, looking back, life’s better. And the biggest thing that happened afterwards was having a family and two kids.” Steve also shared his optimistic view on philanthropy and his belief that, “We’ve reached a tipping point. Young entrepreneurs are finding their passions and they are starting to give back.”

Our Chang-Lin Tien Leadership in Education Award recipient Dr. Liza Cariaga-Lo, Associate Provost of Brown University, spoke to the legacy of Asian American activism on university campuses and challenged today’s leaders to continue addressing inequality in academia. Her dedication to uplifting the underserved is a testament to Chancellor Tien’s legacy.

Lance Cadang, a recipient of our Frederick and Demi Seguritan Scholarship, shared his moving journey — from selling popsicle sticks in Manila to support his family, to thriving as a UC Berkeley biology major. He believes his scholarship serves a greater purpose. According to Lance, â€œIt is a constant reminder that somewhere out there, there are people who believe in people like myself. People who believe that the poor can be smart too; that we, too, deserve a fighting chance to succeed and get ourselves out of poverty."

Vietnamese Youth Development Center’s Soknay Lim delivered a moving tribute to VYDC, which played an essential role in helping her start a new life in the U.S. According to Soknay, â€œWithout the people at VYDC there to guide me, I would have been overwhelmed with family responsibilities and would not have considered college as an option for my future. My hope is for VYDC to continue to help and nurture other youth so that they can discover their potential, like how I discovered mine, and strive for success in their life.”

Finally, our live auction proved to be another highlight of the evening, bringing the crowd to its feet with items like a Dinner at Hakkasan with Yuan Yuan Tan, Joan Chen and Amy Tan, and a Power Lunch with Steve Chen and Jerry Yang. Many thanks to all of our gala and auction sponsors whose generous support helped to make this spectacular evening possible.

You can view photos from the evening here. Thanks again for helping to make our gala a truly memorable celebration!

With gratitude,
