We are thrilled to announce an impressive new leader and welcome two accomplished members to our board of directors.

Sugar Bowl Bakery CEO Andrew Ly Becomes New APF Board Chair

Andrew Ly — CEO of Sugar Bowl Bakery and a board member of the Asian Pacific Fund for six years — has stepped up as the new chair of the Fund’s board of directors, effective July 1, 2016. Andrew succeeds Emerald Yeh, who chaired the board for five years.

Andrew's story is one of resourcefulness, determination and generosity. It begins after the fall of Saigon, when Andrew and members of his family made a perilous seven-day journey from Vietnam to Malaysia on a nine-foot-wide boat with 140 other refugees. Andrew eventually made his way to the United States, where he learned English, put himself through college and, with his brothers, purchased the tiny Sugar Bowl Bakery in San Francisco’s Richmond District. Today the business that the Ly brothers bought for $40,000 generates $100 million in annual sales and is known nationally through such retailers as Costco and Safeway. Andrew has earned many prestigious awards, including recognition by the San Francisco Business Times as the 2007 “Most Admired CEO in the Bay Area” and acknowledgment by President Obama at a 2013 immigration reform event.

As board chair, Andrew provides philanthropic leadership and meaningful connections to the community. "The Asian Pacific Fund is one of the only Bay Area organizations with a focus on the broader Asian and Pacific Islander community. I am excited to lead the board in supporting the Fund's efforts to deepen its impact."
