Dear APCCP Supporters,

Below, please find an important message from the APCCP regarding our call for an Alberta levy on sugary drinks.
Take Action - Support a Levy on Sugary Drinks in Alberta

The APCCP is calling on the Premier to establish a 50 cent per litre levy on sugary drinks to reduce their consumption and generate revenue for Alberta. We recommend that a portion of the revenue generated be used to fund health promotion and chronic disease prevention initiatives in the province.

Sugary drinks, which include beverages such as soft drinks and energy drinks, are a significant contributor of added sugar in the diet. They offer virtually no health benefits and have been linked to serious chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes. Chronic conditions, in turn, place an enormous burden on our quality of life, our economy, and our health care system.

A 50 Cent per Litre Levy on Sugary Drinks:
  • Has the potential to reduce consumption of sugary-loaded drinks.
  • Is estimated to generate revenue of 158 million annually for the province, assuming a 20% decrease in consumption due to taxation.
  • Can provide sustainable funding for health promotion and chronic disease prevention initiatives in Alberta.
