Special Announcement

The APCCP Transitions into a NEW Operational Structure with the
                                       Heart and Stroke Foundation

Over the last two years the APCCP has been generously funded by the Alberta Cancer Prevention Legacy Fund (Alberta Health Services) to generate evidence and advocate for policy change to reduce cancer and chronic disease in Alberta.

With our initial funding period coming to an end on September 30th, we have been working to secure new funding to allow us to maintain the momentum of the Coalition. The APCCP is pleased to announce the Heart and Stroke Foundation as our new funder for the 2011-2012 operational year.  This support will enable the Coalition to continue advocating for policies to promote a healthier Alberta.

The Coalition is currently undergoing a period of transition. Keep reading to learn more about our new name, operational structure, and strategic priorities for the upcoming year.

New Name for the APCCP
As of October 1st 2011, the APCCP has changed its name from Alberta Policy Coalition for Cancer Prevention to the Alberta Policy Coalition for Chronic Disease Prevention. Despite the name change, the acronym for the Coalition will stay the same, as will the overall focus of the coalition.  The new name simply confirms the APCCP’s ongoing commitment to advocating for policy change to prevent all chronic diseases in Alberta.
Recognition awarded to the Provincial Advisory Group

Under the new organizational structure of the Coalition, the APCCP will no longer be formally supported by a Provincial Advisory Group (PAG). The PAG provided invaluable support and advice to the APCCP during its formation and was comprised of individuals with expertise in epidemiology, population health and chronic disease prevention. These members were recognized for their commitment to the APCCP in August of 2011 and awarded with a certificate of appreciation for their contributions.

The APCCP currently consists of thirteen non-governmental organizational members. This new operational structure will allow for an increased emphasis on advocacy by our member organizations. For a complete list of our Coalition members please visit our website.

New Strategic Priority Areas for 2011-2012

In late September, representatives from the 13 coalition member organizations met to identify and develop strategic priorities for action over the coming year. In 2011-2012, the APCCP will focus primarily on advocating for:

  1. The creation of a provincial health promotion foundation with dedicated funding to promote health and prevent chronic disease in Alberta.
  2. Regulations to restrict marketing of unhealthy food and beverages to children and youth in Alberta.
In 2011-12 the APCCP will primarily devote its resources to developing an advocacy strategy to address these two main areas.

All members agreed that the Coalition will continue to support policy development and advocacy efforts to promote healthy eating, active living, tobacco reduction, and alcohol-harm reduction as resources permit. We have recently revised and updated our issue briefs on these topic areas.  Please visit our website to access the newest versions.

Moving Forward
Over the coming weeks, our website will be undergoing several changes to reflect these recent developments. Watch for new resources and more information on our 2011-12 strategic priorities.

Next month, our newsletter will begin featuring each of our APCCP members and their advocacy efforts to prevent chronic disease. Be sure to check our website and newsletters regularly for new information and updates!
