Guide helps to understand 'mining operations'

The Resources Regulator has provided guidance on the interpretation and application of the concept of ‘mining operations’ used in the Work Health and Safety (Mine and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013 (WHSMPS Act).

The regulator has published a guideline Understanding the term mining operations on it's website to assist industry.

The WHSMPS Act applies to all workplaces that are mines. A ‘mine’ is in turn defined by reference to the term ‘mining operations’. Many of the duties under the WHSMPS Act and the Work Health and Safety (Mine and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2014 (WHSMPS Regulation) apply to operators of mines.

It is important to bear in mind that the objectives of the WHSMPS Act include to protect workers at mines and other people against harm to their health and safety through the elimination or minimisation of risks arising from mining i.e. mining risks.
