Expressions of interest: exam panel members sought


Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified and experienced people for appointment as an examination panel member for the new underground mine supervisor for underground mines other than coal mines certificate of competence.

Examination panel members are appointed by the Mining and Petroleum Competence Board under the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013.

The examination panel’s function is to undertake assessments of competence of people applying for a certificate of competence to exercise a statutory function. An examination panel is made up of subject matter experts, including Mine Safety inspectors and statutory position holders within industry.

Responsibilities of an examination panel member include:

  • Coordination of the examinations and fellow panel members (only applicable to the role of convenor)
  • Rigorous and fair determination of a person’s suitability to undertake a competence assessment in line with departmental policies and regulations
  • Setting of written examination papers, and the development of marking guides and model answers
  • Marking of examination papers and conducting oral examinations
  • Provision of feedback when required through formal reviews of assessment outcomes
  • Act with professionalism, integrity and confidentiality.

Requirements of an examination panel member include:

  • Extensive industry experience in a range of mining operations
  • Holding the relevant certificate of competence
  • Demonstrated understanding of work, health and safety legislation, codes and guidelines within the NSW mining industry
  • Experience in the conduct of, or the ability to conduct assessments
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritise workloads and meet competing deadlines.

The following positions are vacant:

  • 1 x convenor, 2 x panel members, numerous casual panel member positions on the underground mine supervisor of underground mines other than coal mines examination panel.
