Spotlight on electrical safety at Tier-1 quarries

In March, we initiated a targeted intervention at Tier-1 quarries across the State, focusing on the management of electrical hazards. The intervention followed an incident investigation for a reported electric shock at a quarry. Our investigation raised significant concerns regarding the testing, inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment at Tier-1 quarries. The Targeted Intervention Program report has been finalised and is available on our website.

New experience requirements for certificates of competence

New experience requirements for new applicants for certificates of competence commenced on 1 April and are published in the Guide and on our website.

A revised log book for experience and mine visits will help applicants compile details of experience under the new requirements. They can be entered into the new online application form which will be available through the Resources Regulator portal in June. More details will be provided in future editions of Mine Safety News. Workshop for practising certificate holders 

We are holding face-to-face session in regional locations for practising certificate holders. The sessions will include updates on maintenance of competence requirements and a self-auditing checklist for logbooks. 

There will also be opportunities for certificate holders to discuss individual matters.

The workshops will be held in June from 10am to 11.30am at the following locations:

  • Gunnedah - Tuesday 8 June 
  • Singleton - Wednesday 9 June
  • Newcastle - Thursday 10 June 
  • Mudgee - Wednesday 16 June 
  • Wollongong - Thursday 17 June

30th annual Electrical Engineering Safety Seminar seeking presenters...

We are seeking experienced and enthusiastic presenters for the 30th annual Electrical Engineering Safety Seminar to be held on 10 and 11 November 2021 at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley.

Seeking qualified people for NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council

Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified people for consideration for appointment as chair of the NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council.

The NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council is a tripartite forum made up of employers, unions and government. It was established to foster an industry with safety as a core value and to provide advice to the Minister on strategic health and safety issues in the mining and extractives industry. It is established under section 60 of the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013.

The Council comprises of people representing the interests of employers and employees in the mining industry, Department of Regional NSW and independent members.

Seeking independent members of the Mining and Petroleum Competence Board

The Mining and Petroleum Competence Board is established under the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013. It provides advice to the Minister and regulator in relation to the setting of competence standards for persons exercising functions at a mine or petroleum site, undertaking assessments for competence, recommending conditions for practising certificates and requirements for maintenance of competence.

The Board comprises people representing the interests of employers and employees, officers of the Department of Regional NSW and independents with expertise in the development and assessment of competence standards for people performing functions at mines. The Board is chaired by an independent chairperson.

Updates from Safe Work Australia  

Work health and safety ministers have endorsed national principles to guide best practice support for families affected by an industrial death. The principles were developed in response to findings in a 2018 Senate inquiry report about industrial deaths in Australia. Read more here.
