We are seeking comment from interested parties on proposed amendments to the Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Act 2013 and Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation 2014 (WHS (MPS) laws). 

This is part of ongoing consultation with the mining and petroleum industries to ensure the laws are achieving their intended aims. Feedback can be provided until Monday 17 May 2021.

Prosecution proceedings regarding a serious injury at Appin Colliery

We have started prosecution proceedings against Endeavour Coal Pty Ltd (ECPL), the operator of Appin Colliery, an underground coal mine in the Illawarra region.

The prosecution relates to an incident where a worker suffered serious injuries to his foot when it became entangled in a scrapper conveyor at the mine on 8 June 2019.

New report: Review of serious injury and illness notifications 

We have reviewed the reporting of serious injuries and illnesses by mine operators and reported the findings to the NSW Mine Safety Advisory Council.

The review found a significant long-term downward trend in the serious injury frequency rate since 2006. One-third of all notified injuries were hand, finger or wrist injuries - often double that of any other bodily location.

Seeking presenters for the mining engineering managers safety seminar 

We are seeking experienced and enthusiastic presenters for the second annual mining engineering managers safety seminar to be held on 13 and 14 October 2021 at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley (Lovedale). 

The submission deadline for presenter applications is 4 June 2021.

We can also confirm that our other major events for 2021 will be held at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley. These include:

  • Mechanical Engineering Safety Seminar - 11 and 12 August 2021
  • Electrical Engineering Safety Seminar - 10 and 11 November 2021.
