Seeking continued commitment

We are seeking the continued support and commitment of all mine operators in NSW to deliver on our vision of a ‘Safe and responsible mining, extractive and petroleum industry’.

During November we are asking the NSW mining industry to focus on ‘Learning from disasters’. Learning from experience, preventing devastating reoccurrences and improving the health and safety of all those working in the mining industry is a profound way to acknowledge and recognise all those affected by mining incidents throughout history.

The Resources Regulator has developed a number of resources on this topic, including an interactive timeline and a training package consisting of three programs to ensure mine workers learn from past mining disasters.

We are seeking your direct support and a commitment to deliver Program 1 to your workforce over the coming weeks and by no later than 6 December 2019. This program is a one-hour induction or refresher training for mine workers.

NSW supports more stringent coal dust and silica exposure standards

The NSW Government will support Safe Work Australia’s recommendation to reduce the Australian Workplace Exposure Standard for respirable coal dust from 2.5 to 1.5 mg/m3 and respirable crystalline silica from 0.1 to 0.05 mg/m3.

The Government will also support SafeWork Australia undertaking further research on whether a reduction to 0.9 mg/m3 for respirable coal dust and 0.02 mg/m3 for respirable crystalline silica is achievable.

Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation Kevin Anderson confirmed the Government position last week as well as announcing a range of new measures targeting silica dust issues in the manufactured stone fabrication industry. Read the media release.

Safe Work Australia has proposed that the reductions be implemented within three years.
