Pompette is a newsletter that's curated to help you
live through your senses.

Where my chocolate cake people at? It’s time to celebrate the best cake of all, because it’s “National Chocolate Cake Day”. The first chocolate cake was baked in 1765 and  has been going strong ever since.

Some chocolate cake varieties are:

  • German Chocolate Cake

  • Flourless Fudge Cake

  • Black Forest Gateau

  • Devil’s Food Cake

  • Chocolate Decadence Cake

  • Molten Chocolate Cake

  • Red Velvet Cake

So many to try, so little time. A lot of people pair sparkling wine with their chocolate cake.  Want to try something new? To find out what libations I suggest, tune into the Pompette Podcast. There are some wonderful spirits and dessert wines that would give your chocolate cake some extra pop.

Magickal tip: You can use chocolate for love spells, romance and grounding. Next time you are conjuring love magick add some chocolate.

Blessed be! XOXO~Shoshi

Kitchen Magick: Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cake

If there’s anything that I took with me when I left living in San Francisco, it’s a love of Ghirardelli Chocolate. It’s one of my favorite brands to use when I bake.

If you want to make a chocolate cake from scratch Ghirardelli has a delish recipe that's quick and rather easy to make.

  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Cocoa

  • 1/2 cup Mini Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips

  • 1 cup all purpose flour

  • 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 6 tablespoons butter, very soft but not melted

  • 2 tablespoons flavorless vegetable oil (such as canola or safflower)

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup cool water

  1. Position a rack in the lower third of the oven.

  2. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.

  3. Grease the pan thoroughly.

  4. If using a round cake pan, line the bottom with a circle of parchment paper.

  5. In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt for 60 seconds on low speed with the electric mixer.

  6. Add the butter, eggs, oil, vanilla, and 2 tablespoons of the water.

  7. Beat on low speed just until all of the dry ingredients are moist.

  8. Turn the mixer to medium speed and beat for 1 minute. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl.

  9. Add 3 tablespoons water and beat for 20 seconds on medium speed. Scrape the bowl and add the remaining 3 tablespoons water.

  10. Beat for 20-30 seconds until the batter is smooth. Fold in the chocolate chips.

  11. Scrape the batter into the pan and spread it evenly.

  12. Bake 35-40 minutes (do not open the oven for the first 30 minutes) or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean (except for melted chocolate chips).

  13. Set the pan on a rack to cool for ten minutes.

  14. Invert the cake onto rack (turn the round cake right side up) to cool completely.

  15. Serve plain or glaze with Ghirardelli Semi Sweet Chocolate Glaze or Ghirardelli Brown Sugar Cocoa Glaze.

  16. Store and serve at room temperature.

Enjoy the magick!
