Exoneration Justice Clinic receives $3 million grant to defend Mexican nationals in
U.S. criminal cases
|
|
Notre Dame Law School’s Exoneration Justice Clinic has been awarded a $3 million grant to administer a program for the defense of Mexican nationals in criminal matters in the United States (“PDM”). This grant is the largest ever received by a Notre Dame Law School clinic, and it will greatly enhance the Exoneration Justice Clinic's ability to support clients and provide valuable learning opportunities for students. The History and Tradition of the Red Mass
The annual Red Mass was held last week in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. This tradition dates back to 1245, and was first celebrated at Notre Dame in 1955. Read about its rich history here.

Daniel R. Murray ‘67 receives Lifetime Achievement Award from the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago
Daniel R. Murray ‘67, a member of the Notre Dame Law School Advisory Council and adjunct faculty member, has been honored with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago. The award was presented at the reception of the 89th Annual Votive Red Mass of the Holy Spirit, last week. Read more here.

Last week the Indiana Court of Appeals brought its "Appeals on Wheels" program to ND Law's McCartan Courtroom. Students attended an argument for the case State v. Lucas, and had the opportunity to ask questions to Judges Robert Altice Jr., Terry Crone, and Elizabeth Tavitas.

Paolo Carozza was quoted in an AP News article, "Rejected by US courts, Onondaga Nation take centuries-old land rights case to international panel" about land rights. See more.

Rick Garnett authored an op-ed for National Review that discusses the federal Title IX religious exemption, a necessary protection for faith-based universities to uphold their religious identity and mission. See more.
Rick will present the annual Hesburgh Lecture of the Notre Dame Club of Utah next Monday, October 16. He will discuss "Religious Freedom in America Today."

Mary Ellen O’Connell presented virtually “Political Economy of Violence” to a conference at the Freie Universität Berlin, Political Economy and the International Laws of Violence.

Derek Muller was quoted in a Reuters article about his analysis of Education Department data for law schools with the highest debt-to-income ratios. See more.

Jim Farrington spoke at the Texas A&M's Journal of Property Law symposium last week as a member of a panel discussing the book, The Genome Defense. He spoke on how the pharmaceutical industry responded to the gene patents that were the subject of this book and similar intellectual property issues. See more.

Stephanie Barclay has two new article drafts."Replacing Smith" was accepted for publication in the Yale Law Journal Forum. "A Crust of Bread: Religious Resistance and the Fourteenth Amendment," with Kurt Lash, was accepted for presentation at the upcoming Originalism Works in Progress Conference.

David McIlroy spoke last Friday at the American Chamber of Commerce in Albania about business ethics in practice.
|

Last week, Cecilia Lopez Monterrosa, an adjunct professor, was honored at the Hispanic Heritage Month Community Celebration and Awards Ceremony in South Bend. To commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, the City of South Bend and La Casa de Amistad unveiled a series of billboards throughout the community, honoring local Latino leaders for their significant contributions to South Bend's rich history and culture.
