Professor Diane Desierto serves as co-counsel in landmark UN ruling for Filipina ‘comfort women’

Diane Desierto began her career in 2004 seeking reparations and justice for Filipina women who suffered from the sexual slavery imposed by the Japanese during World War II. Last week, that long-fought battle was won. Read more here.
Margarette Macaulay of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and Afghan alumni discuss protecting women’s rights

The continued discrimination and oppression of women’s rights around the world and a call for actual change were the themes of a talk on Thursday, March 2, co-sponsored by Notre Dame Law School and the Klau Institute for Civil and Human Rights. Mary Ellen O’Connell was quoted in the Guardian article, “Miscalculation fears rise after Russian fighter jet collides with US drone over Black Sea.” Read more here.

She was also quoted in an article in the daily newspaper in Brazil here.

Nicole Garnett published "Unlocking the Potential of Private-School Choice: Avoiding and Overcoming Obstacles to Successful Implementation for the Manhattan Institute." Read more here.

She was also quoted in "Charter school movement divided over religious Oklahoma proposal." Read more here.
Jeff Pojanowski gave a talk, "Constitutional Interpretation and the Classical Legal Tradition" at the McConnell Center at the University of Louisville. Watch the talk here.
 
Rick Garnett reviewed Columbia Law Professor Philip Hamburger’s book, “Purchasing Submission: Conditions, Power, and Freedom,” for Public Discourse. Read the review here.

Rick gave the Hesburgh Lecture, "Religion and the American Constitutional Experiment," at the University of Montana School of Law last week.  

Carter Snead was the keynote speaker at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast last week in Washington, DC.  More than 1,000 people attended the event. Watch his remarks here (1:19 mark). The event was covered here and here.

Carter also gave the keynote at the inaugural conference of Catholic University of America’s Center on Law and the Human Person on March 14.

On March 23, Diane will join the Pulte Institute's Sustainability and Human Rights Initiative team as the only US university selected to speak at United Nations Headquarters in New York, for the marquee 2023 United Nations Water Conference

While in New York she will deliver her lecture, "Realigning Land Disputes and International Investment Law with Economic, Social and Cultural Rights" at the International Economic Law Colloquium at Brooklyn Law School.
Religious Liberty Clinic News
Stephanie Barclay will participate in oral argument before the en banc Ninth Circuit in the fight to preserve the Apache sacred site at Oak Flat from permanent destruction. Watch the livestream here.
The Religious Liberty Initiative hosted a book launch and discussion with Marcus Cole and Lord David Alton for Alton's and Ewelina Ochab's recent book, "State Responses to Crimes of Genocide: What Went Wrong and How to Change It" last week in London. A fireside chat followed with other panelists touching on themes of the book. See more here.

Maria Ressa, a Filipino and American journalist who won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for reporting on abuses of power and fake news, will be the distinguished speaker for the Asia Leadership Forum, sponsored by the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies and co-sponsored by Notre Dame International. Diane Desierto will moderate a discussion after the lecture. Free but ticketed.
