New holiday ornament celebrates history of Evergreen Cemetery

Happy Holidays from Friends of Evergreen!  As we near the end of 2012, we wanted to share some updates with you...

First walking tour season a success!

Although we have offered walking tours in the past, 2012 marked our first season of regularly-scheduled walking tours of Evergreen Cemetery.  We recruited seven new docents through the Portland History Docents Program, a collaboration among several local museums and non-profits.  Our new docents hit the ground running, doing original research to build upon our existing list of themed tours.  A few examples of new tours were:
  • Maine Prisoners of War
  • Artists of Evergreen
  • Lost at Sea
  • Architecture and Memory
  • Mizpah
  • A Walk Through Portland Past
Our docents led almost 200 visitors through the cemetery this year, and are looking forward to another season beginning in the summer of 2013.  We want to thank all of our docents for their time, enthusiasm and professionalism this year - they have made our first regular season of tours a success and we are so lucky to have them!

The next Portland History Docents Program starts in February.  If you are interested in becoming a docent through this program, you can contact Marjorie Getz, the docent program coordinator, at Greater Portland Landmarks: (207) 774-5561, ext. 120 or via email.

The Friends hosts the first Remembrance Day at Wilde Chapel

The holidays can be a difficult time for those of us who have lost loved ones. Friends of Evergreen hosted a candlelight Remembrance Day ceremony in Wilde Memorial Chapel on December 2nd for people to come spend a few quiet moments of reflection.

We had many people attend this event, while guitarist John Dana played soothing melodies. Rev. Megan Yates led the ceremony, and sang a haunting Taize chant. Friends of Evergreen docents Bob Riley, Carol Jenkins and Sue Devine read the names of those who have been laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery this past year, and many others spoke out the names of their loved ones lost.

This was a very moving event, and we plan to host a similar ceremony next December.

Evergreen Cemetery & Wilde Chapel ornament

Wilde Chapel Ornament imageSpringer's Jewelers, a local jewelry retailer since 1870, has released a holiday ornament that depicts Evergreen Cemetery and it's historic Wilde Memorial Chapel!  The ornament is the 25th in Springer's Landmark Ornament series, and is available from their store for $30.

Springer's has generously agreed to donate $5 to Friends of Evergreen for every customer who presents a copy of this newsletter when purchasing the ornament.  So hit print and head on down to Springer's, located at 580 Congress Street in Portland.  For store hours and more details about the ornament, visit Springer's website.

We also plan to have the ornament available for purchase at some of our events next year.
