Tasmanian sheep industry
Thank you: A very big thank you to all those who completed our 2014 Tasmanian sheep industry survey.

We had an outstanding response rate of more than 40% (the industry's typical response rate is 10–12%); exceeding last year's response rate of 36%.

Your feedback will ensure we continue to provide you with valuable, relevant and timely sheep and wool industry-related information.

Survey winner: This year's winner, who will receive a copy of Andrew Chapman's Around the Sheds book, is Julian von Bibra of Beaufront, Ross.
Ryegrass staggers
Be on the lookout: Feedback from DPIPWE field staff and producers indicates perennial ryegrass staggers may be occurring more than usual this year in some parts of the State.

Signs of the disease in sheep include staggering, being excitable and more flighty, nodding of the head, and jerky limb movements.

Prime lamb profitability
Industry report: Lamb production is currently one of the most profitable livestock enterprises, but to remain in favour continued business investments are required to further improve productivity and increase resilience.

The recently published Prime lamb situation analysis by Holmes Sackett and Meat & Livestock Australia reports all sheep enterprises are currently enjoying superior average profitability compared to beef and dryland cropping.

A strong focus over the last decade on optimising production per hectare has contributed to this result, however the most profitable enterprises focus on maintaining firm control over costs (particularly labour), and production per DSE (dry sheep equivalent); principally growth rate to sale.
