The Deal of the Art

Radius Gallery, an exhibition and commercial art space that opened at Tannery Arts Center in 2014, is branching out to provide a much-needed service to local artists, many of whom lose creative time in their studios trying to market their work.

Radius Gallery owner Ann Hazels, who began representing artists last year by selling their works at the gallery, is now extending her services to artists outside of the exhibit dynamic. In meeting with other local gallery owners and responding to inquiries from artists and collectors, Hazels identified a gap in Santa Cruz.

“It’s about facilitating business logistics for artists and really keeping them in the studios creating art,” Hazels said. “The other side of it is for the collector. I hope to build up a reputation for Radius to be a spot where you are guaranteed to find extraordinary art or curated shows featuring artists with a strong reputation and portfolio.”

She found that artists also benefit from building a longer-term relationship with an agent who is familiar with their work and the interests of local art patrons.  Margaret Niven, a Tannery Lofts resident since 2009 who does printmaking, painting and drawing, is one of several artists now represented by Radius.

“It’s a lot of tedium, organizing photos, finding opportunities,” Niven said regarding promotional activities. “Ann is one of the first people to do representation locally. I haven’t been aware of another gallery taking on artists to represent.”

Spring Grant Cycle - Open!

Santa Cruz has the 5th highest density of artists per capita in the nation and the Arts Council has provided support to keep Santa Cruz County’s creative culture thriving for more than 37 years. The Arts Council brings in funding from a variety of federal, state and local grant sources, and then distributes that funding through five distinct grant programs.

“We are proud of the role that the Arts Council has played for almost four decades in helping make Santa Cruz County so extraordinary. We are committed to supporting the creators, makers, and administrators who bring such vibrancy to this community through their daily work of art,” says Michelle Williams, Executive Director.

The Spring Grant Cycle is open!
Application deadline of March 15, 2017
Interested artists and arts organizations can visit santacruz.culturegrants.org to learn more about our grant programs and guidelines, and to apply online.
