Great American Mug Show : A Love Story
September 14-25, 2016

The Radius Gallery Welcomes the Great American Mug Show, an exhibition celebrating the potter and includes the work of 55 artists from all over America.

The mug is the everyday symbol of the American potter. Americans start their day holding a vessel containing something warm. Design and function are key aspects of a mug. Size, shape, color, containing coffee or tea, with a saucer or without, or just a plain cup, form will dictate utility.

Mugs are the friendly exchange among potters, giving a kind gesture to a fellow craftsman showcasing one’s concept.  The mug creates great revenue for the potter because it is the item that every consumer connects with.

Radius Gallery in Santa Cruz's historic Tannery invites you to the inaugural Great American Mug Show – A Love Story. Gallery hours: Wednesday – Sunday 12:00-5:00pm and by appointment. Free and open to the public.

LINDA COVER JOINS OPEN STUDIOS

Tannery artist Linda Cover has been making art her entire life, but October 2016 will be her first time as an Open Studios Art Tour artist. She started out drawing, then doing videography, documentaries, and is now focusing on photography and encaustic painting. Her subjects are all images from the natural world, “A plant in a crack in the sidewalk says “look at me” and I do,” exclaims Linda. One of her all-time favorite subjects to paint is Redwood trees and “understanding the relationship of plants, Redwood trees and mycelium, and knowing plants and individual trees as my friends.”

Linda Cover adores living at the Tannery, “I knew that it would be an exceptional place for artists, and it’s true. The inspiration we get from each other, even if it’s just running into each other in the elevator-- there’s a thousand ways of speaking to each other through the art language.” Linda Cover says she waited in line to live at the Tannery and is grateful to the people who established the Tannery, including Artspace, “There’s nothing like it in the United States.”
The start of each week just got a whole lot better! The ArtBar hosts an ALL DAY Happy Hour with wildly discounted wines, cocktails, and draft beers.  Full food menu!
