New Season

It’s 50 years since the superb Afrikaans poet Ingrid Jonker took her life, and South African composer Bongani Ndodana-Breen is remembering her with his new composition, Three Orchestral Songs on Poems by Ingrid Jonker.  This forms part of the new season which runs from October 22 to November 12 – dates down the side, details on www.cpo.org.za. Other highlights in the season include Homage to Sibelius and the return of one of the leading cellists of the day, Maria Kliegel.

Gifts to the CPO

The CPYO relies not only on the CPO but on the generosity of sponsors and donors, some of who donate in kind. Fula Paxinos is one of those generous people. Having met Laurika Steenkamp at the 1st Len van Zyl Competition six years ago, she has a soft heart for the young and, when she decided to clear out some of her possessions, the CPYO became the proud beneficiary of tuxedos, concert dresses and many petticoats. Thank you, Fula, We really appreciate it.

Music centres so central to our business

The CPO and the outreach projects have had a really close relationship over the last decade and more with Cape Town’s music centres, Beau Soleil, the Hugo Lambrechts and Frank Pietersen and with the universities of Cape Town and their music schools.  What the music centres do, says CPO’s outreach manager Laurika Steenkamp, is provide excellent training to a really high standard which allows the CPO to build on this, give the young musicians orchestral experience on a professional level with one-on-one mentorship by CPO members, and help prepare many of them for a career in music at university. Beau Soleil holds a special place in our hearts, for many of the young players who now play and teach in the CPO’s music programme have come through its ranks.
Take Noluvuyo Nteta, now a student at Stellenbosch.  She began to study the violin when she was 11 in 1999, with Kathy Garrity at the  IFIDYOLI Strings Project at Beau Soleil, where she received her grounding and honed her passion.  By 2008, those skills allowed her to join the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Not only does she play in the CPYO, but she has become a teacher in the CPO’s skills transfer Masidlale grass roots project, which teaches violin to those from other communities who have had no access to music...read more

CPYO happenings

A trio of CPYO musicians played at a function at an innovative walk through that preceded the opening of the first new-style Pick ‘n Pay store in Eversdal earlier this month.

Ash-Lee Louwskieter appointed Project Manager at Madisalale

We have a new project manager at Masidlale, the CPO’s grassroots training project. Ash-Lee Louwskieter, who was involved in the Mamre woodwinds Masidlale project from inception, is now running the show! And what a show.  He will have to manage teachers as well as train student teachers, devise and run workshops for learners and teachers, develop teaching strategies, manage events and concerts, maintain a roster of loaned instruments and continuously evaluate while identifying and developing talented young people. He is well equipped to do all that and more.  At 30, he has been interim manager for a while, and is a well grounded young man with all the values we would like our children to have. Ash-Lee joined both the CPO youth orchestra and wind ensemble in 2009. His talents were immediately embraced, and he was chosen as one of the recipients of CPO bursaries to the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festivals.
