Len van Zyl Conductors' Competition Closing

The excitement is building as the closing date approaches and entries are coming in.  The cachet of this competition has certainly added lustre to the careers of previous winners Brandon Phillips and Xavier Cloete, and we know winning it will do the same.
Entries to by March 15 please.
Entry forms available here.

AV's Gifts and Flowers

The CPO would like to record its on-going gratitude to Avril Petro, who for many years, has been providing flowers for artists as her contribution to the performing arts and the orchestra in particular. Avril’s daughter Alexis is a flautist who has had links with the orchestra. This season alone, Avril presented stunning bouquets to Susanne Hou and Maria du Toit.  We would like to think you support those who support us – Avril can be reached on 021 705 1234

Joshua Bell plays Tchaikovsky

We hoped to open bookings at Computicket today but have only now been able to finalise the concerto. He will play the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on August 26 and 27 at the City Hall. Bookings  should be open at Computicket by the weekend.

If you want to join the Friends of Orchestral Music, please contact the chairman Derek Auret at or go to the website

Duet Trust Celebration

Sunday night celebrates the birth of Duet, the trust established to support the orchestra and Cape Town Opera. At 18:00 at Artscape Opera, you can hear the best of symphonic and opera music, with both companies – CTO and CPO under the direction of Kamal Khan,  joined by the young choral members from the St Andrew’s Primary school in Saldanha, vocal soloists Derick Ellis, Arline Jaftha, Bongani Kubheka, Goitsemang Lehobye, Mandisinde Mbuyazwe, Lukhanyo Moyake, Xolela Sixaba and Siphamandla Yakupa along with piano soloists Nina Schumann and Luis Magalhaes with works from Verdi, Mascagni, Puccini and Poulenc and more.  The concert is directed by Christine Crouse.  Tickets from Computicket. Read the Cape Times interview with Kamal Khan here.

Music Academy settling in

Noluvuyo Nteta, who is about to start a satellite Masidlale in Kayamandi, continues to teach at the Music Academy which moved to Rhodes School in Mowbray. The 200 youngsters who attend theory and practical lessons each week are part of the 500-strong education and outreach CPO projects. Here Faye Systers learns about posture while Haidr Booley takes note.

Happy Birthday

Last week’s concert sponsor. Dr Axel Horvath, a dentist in Würzburg, Germany, has been a supporter of the orchestra in Cape Town for more than 30 years, attending concerts during his mostly annual visits  since 1978, so it was appropriate he chose to celebrate his birthday with the CPO.  An amateur musician who still plays in a saxophone quartet, and is a member of Jungle Orchestra, playing jazz and dance music of the 1920s and 1930s, he was for 25 years chairman of the Deutsch-Südafrikanische Gesellschaft in Würzburg, the German/South-African-Association which sponsored the CTPO and other cultural institutions. A member of Friends of Orchestral Music, he became a Centenary Circle member by donating R100 000 to mark the centenary of the orchestra and was a major sponsor of FOM’s successful gala concert in December. At the reception last week, he added to this generosity by handing over his own clarinet, an instrument that will be of great value in the youth orchestra!
We thank him for generosity, wish him many happy returns, and celebrate his his latest initiative, proCAPEriccio. This enables German supporters of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra to have a vehicle to donate to the CPO and get tax benefits in Germany.  ProCAPEriccio’s only aim is to raise funds for the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra via FOM from amongst its German members and supporters. All donations to “proCAPEriccio” will enjoy tax exemption from the German authorities.
Dr Horvath believes very strongly in the future of the CPO and its outreach initiatives and knows there are like-minded people in Germany.  If you have friends or family overseas who may be interested, please forward them to Dr Horvath via email or write to: Postfach 58 07, 97008 Würzburg, Tel. +49 (0)931 804 7828
