CPYO to play for Nobel Laureates

The Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra has been invited to perform at the opening for 250 special guests at the 14th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates on October 13 – 15  at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.   Brandon Phillips will conduct. It is has been a year of hard work for outreach and development manager Laurika Steenkamp who handled all the negotiations which finally fell into place this week .  Our board member, Mrs Elita de Klerk, wife of a laureate,  was a valuable aid!
The City was nominated as host city in celebration of the 20th anniversary since South Africa’s peaceful transition into democracy. South Africa has been home to four Nobel Peace Prize Laureates – Desmond Tutu and FW de Klerk, and the late Albert Luthuli and Nelson Mandela.

Concerts coming up...

We are lucky that ZUILL BAILEY managed to fit us into his schedule – he’s away from home more than 300 days in a year and involved with his own festival in his hometown in Texas for much of the rest of the time!  Read why, and we have this on great authority, this dynamic and accomplished cellist has such a profound effect on his audience ...read more from the Cape Times. Bailey will be signing CDs at Dynamite Music at the City Hall tonight.
“THE BEATLES” arrived yesterday, and created a stir at the airport with their guitars and clear resemblance to the Fabulous Four.  There are still tickets for three of the four performances this weekend at Artscape Opera on Saturday at 14:00 and Sunday at 20:00.  Friday night is sold out and Saturday night may be by the time you read this.  Here’s what’s in store ...read more

Shlomo Mintz adds another string to his bow

The legendary violinist Shlomo Mintz, on his way to play Mendelssohn with the Cape Town Philharmonic next week (August 21 at a gala concert at Artscape at 20:00), has been appointed inaugural artist-in-residence at the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, performing in the QSO’s main stage concert season, leading a chamber music performance with QSO musicians and presenting workshops, masterclasses and talks.

What others said about last week’s concert:

Die Burger’s Pieter Kooij called the interpretation of the Rachmaninov Symphony no 2 in E minor outstanding  … “the orchestra delivered their best for Maestro Gueller. The strings played with a rich tone; the brass were first-class and the individual players stood out with the solos.  I don’t think I have heard a better live performance of this symphony.” Kooij also liked the fast and sparking overture to Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro.
What’s on in Cape Town’s Mustapha Hendricks said this about Rachmaninov:
The sound was full, engorging the audience, so much so that they sat in flabbergasted silence at the close of the third movement. They had stumped us and we loved it. For the final movement we all sat there, knowingly, as if we had watched an orchestra mature into a true beast of acoustic mastery.
About John Ntsepe, he wrote: We were graced with the skilful and passionate John Ntsepe; a home-grown cum internationally trained pianist. The audience was behind him all the way as he displayed his vast tutelage, ranging from Finland to Vienna.
