Dear FOM gala-goers

Forgive us if you have received this FOM newsletter from another source and already bought your tickets for the FOM gala with the CPO on November 2, but we didn’t want you to miss out.

Zuill Bailey's South Africa Tour began with a visit to luscious Durban, where he performed the Dvorak cello concerto on October 19th, with the KZN Philharmonic. Zuill then flew to Johannesburg and met up with pianist Brian Wallick. (Bryan played the Prokofiev Piano Concerto no.2 for us in May last year). Zuill and Bryan perfected a concoction of Bach, Beethoven, Paganini, and Daugherty, and performed a recital for the Johannesburg Musical Society on October 22nd. Then they quickly left for Port Elizabeth to play a recital on October 23rd! - Boccherini, Beethoven, Piatigorsky, and Daugherty...

Last night, October 25th, Zuill played Dvorak with the Johannesburg Philharmonic conducted by Arjan Tien, and they are doing that again tomorrow night! A repeat of the same program, with the Glinka Russlan and Ludmilla overture and Berlioz Symphony Fantastique.

Zuill playing in Durban with the KPO left, and in Johannesburg, with Bryan Wallick, right.

You can say what you like about the man but he certainly has stamina!

Zuill played Dvorak cello concerto for us in August 2014, so we asked him the play the Saint-Saëns this time. He is also throwing in the irresistible Thaïs "Meditation", which he transcribed himself, for cello. We hope you are looking forward to enjoying the deep mellow tones of Zuill's "rosette" 1693 Matteo Gofriller Cello, formerly owned by Mischa Schneider of the Budapest String Quartet. Tickets can be bought here.

Durban City Hall, Thursday 19 October
Conducted by Lykele Temmingh
Review: William Charlton-Perkins

"...Expectations ran high when it came to the evening’s soloist, the Grammy Award winning American cellist, Zuill Bailey. These were more than fulfilled by the distinguished soloist’s thrilling, nuanced performance of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B minor... The searing beauty of Bailley’s performance was tenderly matched by the consolation of the winds...

The October Recital for the Johannesburg Musical Society
Zuill Bailey cello, Bryan Wallick piano
Review: Moira de Swardt

"It was a dark and stormy night but the auditorium was respectably full, with people really not wanting to miss the opportunity to hear this world class concert. It was a wonderful concert.  Zuill Bailey is one of the world’s leading cellists. However, it is his charisma as a raconteur about his life and music that makes the work so compelling...
