Vienna's farewell to Johan Botha

The CPO made a donation to CANSA, a gift made poignant given the tragic death of the great tenor Johan Botha. Botha had asked that all concert presenters on his final tour support cancer research. Here is how Vienna bade him goodbye.

Masidlale learners wow at Artscape

Masidlale learners gave a heart-warming concert at Artscape a week ago. Several new learners, aged 5 and 6, made their  performance debut!

Camerata Tinta Barocca and Handel

CPO violinist Annien Shaw joins Tinta Barocca for its concert on Wednesday, 19 October, at 20:00 at the Dutch Reformed Church in Rondebosch.  Lynelle Kenned (soprano) and Bettina von Dombois (baroque violin) will be part of the all-Handel programme including Gloria and the Organ Concerto op. 4 no. 5. Tickets at the door and pre-concert talk by Erik Dippenaar at 19:15.

Concerts coming up

Tickets to the first Beethoven Choral concert on November 17 are sold out but there’s always a chance someone may return a couple to the box office; there may still be some now or later  for the November 19 performance.  There is, however, a performance at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre on November 20. Bookings will open next week.

CPO plays for Youth Music Competition
The competition, started by Michael Maas, features some of the country’s most talented musicians. The finalists will play for the title on October 15 at the Hugo Lambrechts  Music Centre in Parow at 19.30. The CPO will be conducted by Brandon Phillips. Book here.
Carmen with the CPO
The CPO will be conducted by Tim Murray, who recently conducted the orchestra to great acclaim in the UK with Cape Town Opera’s Mandela Trilogy. There will be five performances of Bizet’s ebullient opera, beginning on October 20.  More details here.

The Armed Man  
The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town joins the CPO under the direction of Richard Cock for one performance of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man (or “Mass for Peace”).  This will take place on October 15 at the City Hall at 8 pm. Further info here.

Ponti, Evita and Daniel Richards

Evita Bezuidenhout and Carlo Ponti team up in the youth gala concert on November 13  with Peter and the Wolf.  More excitement comes from the addition of  Daniel Richards (of Bring Back the Curry) who will narrate a completely new script he is developing for Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.  Also on the programme are a number of popular pieces like Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean, This concert is in aid of the Darling Trust and the CPYO. Congrats to Arjan Tien

Arjan Tien, who will be back in Cape Town for the 11th International Summer Music Fesival in January, has been appointed chief conductor of the orchestra of the Royal Dutch Navy. We wish him many years of great concerts!
