New board members


The CPO welcomes Lerato Ndlovu and Nisaar Pangarker, who joined the CPO board this week. Ms Ndlovu has a wealth of knowledge and experience in human capital development, succession planning strategies, business development and talent development.
Mr Pangarker is a managing executive at Brimstone with a focus on group marketing, corporate communications, and investor relations.

Soloists for the 3rd Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition

Three brilliant young musicians have been chosen as the soloists to perform in the 3rd Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and three talented young conductors on the cusp of a career and who will have reached the final round. The concert takes place on February 14 at the Cape Town City Hall at 20:00.  
      
Jeffrey Armstrong (19), former concertmaster of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra who is in his first year at the Birmingham Conservatoire, will play the Introduction and Rondo Capriccio by Saint-Saëns; Shaheel Kooverjee (19) will play the first movement of the Second Piano Concerto no 2 in C minor by Rachmaninov, and Leo Gevisser (12), will play the first movement of the Piano Concerto in G by Ravel. Gevisser and Kooverjee performed in the Artscape National Youth Music Festival. The other works on the programme are Capriccio Espagnol by Rimsky Korsakov, Noon Witch by Dvořák and the overture from Tannhäuser by Wagner. Read more

CPO’s dates with Cape Town Opera at Artscape opera

  •  Richard Strauss’s Salome with Gerard Korsten conducting; opening March 15 
  •  Pretty Yende and Sunnyboy Dladla with Kamal Khan on the podium on March 21 to highlight the Duet Endowment Trust to sustain orchestra and opera 
  • The prestigious International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition on the 2nd July, the first time ever held outside Europe; a collaboration of the CPO, CTO and UCT
  • Bizet’s Carmen with CTO associate music director Tim Murray conducting the CPO, opening October 20

Masidlale concerts end the year on a high note 


The last of four concerts with gifted musicians, musicians, aged five to 14, from the CPO’s Masidlale (Let us play) projects, ended the year on a high note with a packed gala concert at Guga S’thebe in Langa on Saturday. The projects were made possible by the support of the City of Cape Town’s Arts and Culture Department and the Western Cape Government. The concert include learners from Masidlale’s satellite projects in Atlantis, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Nyanga and Mamre.  Ash-Lee Louwskieter, manager of Masidlale, played trombone with some of the  string players. Read more

De Kat to broadcast Ndodana-Breen tribute to Ingrid Jonker


De Kat is broadcasting a documentary on Ingrid Jonker with music by Bongani Ndodana Breen performed by the CPO and sung by Goitsemang Lehobye under the direction of Perry So. The concert took place in October, while the broadcast will be on December 27 on KykNet Channel 144 at 18:30.

Marlene le Roux, new head of Artscape


The CPO would like to congratulate Marlene le Roux, who has just been appointed to the challenging role of Chief Executive Officer of the Artscape Theatre Centre.  Ms Le Roux has been a friend of the Cape Town Philharmonic almost since its inception (she joined Artscape shortly after the CPO was established at the end of 2000) and, says CEO of the CPO Louis Heyneman, she has made an impact not only on Artscape but on the CPO in its collaborations with Artscape.  â€œWe are delighted she has been appointed to this role and know she will rise to the challenge.” Read more

FOM Gift to CPO 


The orchestra would like to acknowledge the generous donation made by Friends of Orchestral Music at the gala fundraiser in November.  The CPO is indeed grateful for the dedication of the committee, in particular, and values the hard work that goes into organizing concerts and events that not only help to keep the name of the CPO top of mind but also bring in funds.The Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra’s musicians have their own thanks to pass on – FOM provided them with stand lights which will come in very handy for concerts coming up.  

Former CPO ad hoc now principal cello, La Scala Academy


Tobias Kotze, a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch, won the coveted position of principal cello of the Accademia di Orchestra La Scala in Milan, Italy. Kotze played as an ad hoc with the CPO before going abroad for further study.  Kotze studied at the University of Stellenbosch with Dalena Roux as his cello teacher and continued his cello studies in Europe. He is currently working on his master’s degree at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland.
