Tough Love

Key Bible Verse: Where God’s love is, there is no fear, because God’s perfect love drives out fear. (1 John 4:18, NCV)

Dig Deeper: Romans 8:31-39
Are you able to recognize the dynamic interplay between fear and faith in your life?

As you look over the story of your life, do you see the ways that Jesus has brought you to the intersection of fear and faith?

This is one of the primary ways that Jesus shows his love for us.  It doesn’t usually feel warm and fuzzy in the moment, but Gary Haugen is right [in today’s Thought to Apply], “The boundary of our range of actions is determined by our ultimate fears … and our fears often remain hidden” until Jesus creates an environment or stimulus to bring them to the light.

Jesus bring us directly to the boundary of our fundamental fears.  The context for this can take so many different shapes.  Sometimes a new opportunity is the catalyst, and other times it is a crisis.  At times it is a conversation with a friend, and other times it happens during a time of self-reflection and prayer.

Fear draws boundaries and sets limits on our life.  It’s what fear will do to us if we fail to acknowledge its presence and learn how to follow Jesus out of our fears and into a faith-filled life.

     — Daniel Hill in 10:10: Life to the Fullest
My Response: When was the last time Jesus brought me to the intersection of fear and faith?  How did I respond?  What can I do right now to start preparing for the next time Jesus brings me to this intersection?
Thought to Apply: For many of us the boundary of our range of action is determined by our ultimate fears … and our fears often remain hidden (even from ourselves) right up to the very moment when we must act.
