Closing the year and celebrating the decade in grand fashion! (14th Dec)
Themed “1960s Hong Kong,” Enlighten’s 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner saw the who’s who of Hong Kong in their glamorous avatar. It was an evening when guests were transferred back to the vibrant years of the 1960s in Hong Kong with the ballroom decked in red, black and gold designed to be an “intimate private club.”
It was an evening of fun and entertainment including the popular chopstick dance, but the highlight was the tremendous performance by Dr. David Fang. The opera singer’s magnificent voice enraptured the entire ballroom leaving many misty-eyed. Dr. Fang helped raise over HKD$380,000 on the evening, as the guests simply couldn’t get enough and pledged for him to sing more!
The evening closed on a big high as almost HK$1.5million was raised, which is almost a third of the money needed to run the charity for another year! Enlighten is very grateful to the guest of honour Dr. Ko Wing-man, all the guests, the gala dinner committee, Berge Studio, Grand Hyatt and Openheart for their support in making the evening a grand success!
Christmas Party & BBQ for Enlighten Members (7th, 8th Dec)
One of Enlighten's major service areas is 'community support' to support those directly and indirectly affected by epilepsy, and as part of the community support activity, Enlighten organises family days and family gatherings providing opportunities for the families to network, meet and share with each other. As part of Christmas celebrations, Enlighten was delighted to host two community support holiday parties for members of Enlighten. The Christmas Party Lunch Buffet held on 7th December was an afternoon of spreading joy and happiness with more than 100 members attending the same . The members enjoyed the various games, food and of course Santa's gifts made their day! Enlighten thanks all the volunteers including our Santa Claus and the ''Master of Ceremonies Volunteer Group''.
The “BBQ Christmas Party” which was held on 8th of December was very popular with the younger members, who always enjoy an outdoorsy celebration. Their parents were also delighted with the BBQ especially the huge variety of vegetables !
Volunteers played ping pong, recreational chess and many games with our members. We are glad to have provided an evening to remember for our members and their families.

EOC workshop (23rd Nov)
We were delighted that the senior lecturer from Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) agreed to do a talk on “Disability Discrimination Ordinance” on 23 Nov, 2013. This talk provided detailed explanation on the concepts in the ordinance, with case studies to help the attendees understand its practical application and enabling them to know about their fundamental human rights. The lecturer also encouraged members to share their past experiences of discrimination and used it as an example to show how it can be better tackled and handled.
Enlighten sails into 3rd and 4th place at Hebe Haven 24 hr Charity Dinghy Race! (26th Oct)
After weeks of practice in the waters of Sai Kung, team Enlighten were ready to sail away at the 24hr Hebe Haven Charity Dingy Race! This year 5 Enlighten members (people affected by epilepsy) practiced their sailing skills, a first for many! Enlighten was grateful to be supported by team CBRE.
It was wonderful to see hundreds of supporters gathered at the starting line to kick-start the event at 2 pm making it Hong Kong’s biggest family sailing event. The bright sunny weather would have definitely added to their motivation to be outdoors! With the support of some enthusiastic volunteers, Enlighten was glad to have the opportunity to set up an awareness booth offering epilepsy information, selling Christmas toys and setting up games to encourage children to gravitate towards the booth.
A 24hr Charity race is not the same without good food and Enlighten team member Nigel Slattery’s delicious lasagna was devoured by the team keeping their enthusiasm and caloric intake strong! It was wonderful for all those present to see 32 Enlighten members, some even in wheelchairs visiting on day 2 to cheer the team and enjoy a recreational junk ride!
We were proud to finish 3rd with the Sailability boat and 4th overall! We are also very grateful to Hebe Haven for choosing Enlighten as one of the beneficiaries and the $97,500 donated will be used to continue one of our critical services- “raising epilepsy awareness.”
Property Quiz @ Coast (9th Oct)
The property quiz saw 10 teams make their way to the “Coast Bar and Restaurant” representing their respective property companies. Everyone was in high spirits on this Thursday evening and the short speech by Enlighten HOPE Hero Melanie Krepp, who shared her personal story of living with epilepsy drove home the point that though people with epilepsy might face some challenges, they are not different from you and I.
After the epic saga of the 4 rounds, “Team Swires” were the crowned champions of the quiz!
十月九日，有10隊物業公司參加比賽，並為啟迪會善款。腦癇英雄 ─ Melanie Krepp分享自身經歷， 令在場人士加深對腦癇症認識。在一輪激烈比賽後，最終由「Team Swires」勝出。
Join us in Painting the Town Purple this March!
March is special to us at Enlighten. It is Epilepsy awareness month in Hong Kong and launch of our month-long awareness campaign, "PAINT THE TOWN PURPLE". Lavender(purple) is the colour associated with epilepsy and is based on the premise that just as the lavender grows in seclusion, a person with epilepsy might feel secluded and socially excluded.
We are currently in the process of planning a range of activities for the month of March and welcome all the support to build it into an even bigger movement.
If you have any ideas or would like to get involved and support our cause, please do get in touch with email@example.com. Visit www.enlightenhk.org/index.php/purple to get a peek at how various retail outlets, hotels, schools, corporates supported us last year in 'going purple'.
