Purple Carnival at Chinese YMCA (2nd March)

The Purple Carnival for our members(those directly and indirectly affected by epilepsy) was held to kick-off the awareness month in Hong Kong. The event at the YMCA Kowloon Centre was an amusement day catering to  families with a number of stalls and activities including the ever popular bouncy castles and balloon twisting.
Our members were encouraged to “tackle” epilepsy with drill sessions organised by the HKRU, followed by a melodious performance by our ‘Paint the Town Purple’ ambassador and queen of children’s songs- Purple Lee.  They also  enjoyed various performances including choir singing, acrobatics and melodious guzheng music that wowed the audience with their talent. The highlight of the day was the first appearance of our mascot- Ellie the epiphant and the beautiful balloon models by a group of volunteers, who took pride in their passion for creating beautiful pieces of art!

We are very grateful to all the volunteers, who made the day happen!

SoHo halts to see PURPLE. (22nd March)

Saturday afternoon crowds in Soho and  passer-by on the Central-Mid-Levels escalators were witness to  a sudden “purple dance” performance by the students of Future Stars Dance Academy, all to raise epilepsy awareness. Instructor Melissa and her girls dressed in Purple “Tackling Epilepsy” T-shirts danced with our mascot, Ellie the epiphant. Click here to enjoy the dance and share it to help spread the word on awareness.

It was wonderful to see people stopping to watch the dance, many armed with their smartphones to capture the moves. Staff of one of our Paint the Town Purple campaign’s biggest supporters- Stauntons Group supported us post-event by distributing leaflets and purple wristbands.

Enlighten would like to thank all the girls and their families who participated.  A special thank you to their instructor Melissa Thornton without whose support this would have not been possible.

Our patron, former Scottish International and British and Irish Lions, Tom Smith was in Hong Kong for the big Rugby Sevens Weekend and to kick it off in grand fashion Enlighten hosted a fundraising brunch at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel.

Guests were treated to a wonderful brunch with good food; an interesting interview with Tom Smith and John Rae Smith, and an auction of some amazing stuff including rugby memorabilia. It sure ended on a sweet and funny note with guests enjoying their desserts while laughing with local stand-up comedian Nick Milnes.

Ex-Joe Bananas turns into 'Purple Sevens' for a week!

Ex- Joe Bananas, a popular hangout on Luard road in Wan Chai went all purple a week before the Rugby Sevens. We were delighted to be the charity of their choice on one of the busiest weekends in Hong Kong.  They very generously donated 10% of the total proceeds to Enlighten. A special thanks to Rio's management team and Natasha Sokell who helped create a unique purple atmosphere.

Open-Top Bus Awareness Drive
(March 26th)

On World Purple Day we set out on the roads of Hong Kong in an open-top bus all decked in purple to spread awareness about our cause. We started our adventure at 10am in the morning and covered parts of Kowloon after which we progressed to the Island. Staff from CBRE also joined us during their lunch hour to create more noise from atop the bus by cheering and shouting slogans that received a lot of reactions from the crowd. A big thanks to all the volunteers who cheered all the way and distributed flyers to help us spread the word.
