March is Epilepsy Awareness Month in Hong Kong. This year, Enlighten’s month long campaign to promote epilepsy awareness saw over 80 outlets ‘going purple’. Launched in 2012, ‘Paint the town purple’ campaign aims to use the color purple to raise awareness of this condition (that nobody wants to speak about due to the stigma), in fun and collaborative ways with retails outlets, restaurants, hotels, and the local community. 一般腦癇症患者怯於承認和公開病情。如你和朋友去咖啡館，他因穿著紫色便可獲得折扣，你會想知道為什麼? 這正是Opendoor Café and Courtyard藉此機會推廣關注腦癇症。
Purple Carnival at Chinese YMCA (2nd March)
The Purple Carnival for our members(those directly and indirectly affected by epilepsy) was held to kick-off the awareness month in Hong Kong. The event at the YMCA Kowloon Centre was an amusement day catering to families with a number of stalls and activities including the ever popular bouncy castles and balloon twisting.
Our members were encouraged to “tackle” epilepsy with drill sessions organised by the HKRU, followed by a melodious performance by our ‘Paint the Town Purple’ ambassador and queen of children’s songs- Purple Lee. They also enjoyed various performances including choir singing, acrobatics and melodious guzheng music that wowed the audience with their talent. The highlight of the day was the first appearance of our mascot- Ellie the epiphant and the beautiful balloon models by a group of volunteers, who took pride in their passion for creating beautiful pieces of art!
We are very grateful to all the volunteers, who made the day happen!
SoHo halts to see PURPLE. (22nd March)
Saturday afternoon crowds in Soho and passer-by on the Central-Mid-Levels escalators were witness to a sudden “purple dance” performance by the students of Future Stars Dance Academy, all to raise epilepsy awareness. Instructor Melissa and her girls dressed in Purple “Tackling Epilepsy” T-shirts danced with our mascot, Ellie the epiphant. Click here to enjoy the dance and share it to help spread the word on awareness.
It was wonderful to see people stopping to watch the dance, many armed with their smartphones to capture the moves. Staff of one of our Paint the Town Purple campaign’s biggest supporters- Stauntons Group supported us post-event by distributing leaflets and purple wristbands.
Enlighten would like to thank all the girls and their families who participated. A special thank you to their instructor Melissa Thornton without whose support this would have not been possible.

Enlighten members visit Fan Zone and HK SEVENS
Thanks to the generosity of our “Tackling Epilepsy” campaign supporter, The Hong Kong Rugby Football Union, our members got an opportunity to be at the new sevens fan zone that was laid out on the Central promenade. They also practiced some rugby skills which tested their hand to eye coordination with members of the HK Scottish team and some of the future stars of Scotland, who were playing at the Sevens. Members also received Friday complimentary tickets to the Sevens enabling them to enjoy the real Sevens fever!
Kicking off the Seven’s Rugby Weekend. (28th March)
Our patron, former Scottish International and British and Irish Lions, Tom Smith was in Hong Kong for the big Rugby Sevens Weekend and to kick it off in grand fashion Enlighten hosted a fundraising brunch at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel.
Enlighten CEO, Claudia Schlesinger spoke about the urgent need to build epilepsy awareness in Hong Kong followed by the Enlighten video that potrays some of our HOPE Heroes, who talk about their living with epilepsy.
Guests were treated to a wonderful brunch with good food; an interesting interview with Tom Smith and John Rae Smith, and an auction of some amazing stuff including rugby memorabilia. It sure ended on a sweet and funny note with guests enjoying their desserts while laughing with local stand-up comedian Nick Milnes.
