An American documentary film that explores the Special Period in Peacetime and its aftermath; the economic collapse and eventual recovery of Cuba following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Following the dramatic steps in response to the sudden lack of oil, taken by both the Cuban government and citizens, its major themes include urban agriculture, energy dependence, and sustainability.

Recipient of People's Choice Award for Best International Film at Aotearoa Environmental Film Festival

We are very grateful to George Woodard and Gerianne Smart for bringing “The Summer of Walter Hacks” to us on September 21st . Not only was this event a successful fund-raiser for the VT Farm Disaster Relief Fund, but it was also very entertaining and inspiring. The audience was spellbound, and even after the film ended, they stayed for another half hour to quiz George and Gerianne about the making of the film!
