The 11th Annual Oppenheimer Park Community Art Show

Opening Reception: Friday, September 7th 6-9pm

Exhibition runs: September 7th - October 28th, 2018

Opening day parade at 5pm from Oppenheimer Park (488 Powell St)
to Gallery Gachet (9 W Hastings St)

From September 7th through October 28th, 2018, Oppenheimer Park and Gallery Gachet are pleased to present What these trees have seen, an exhibition showcasing artwork from the Oppenheimer Park community. Included are paintings, drawings, print, sculpture, carvings and mixed media works. Artists will be present at the opening reception, Friday September 7, 2018. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm-6pm.

Oppenheimer Park is the site of Legacy Sakura trees planted in 1977 by a group of over 70 first generation seniors as part of a project coordinated by the Tonari Gumi (Japanese Community Volunteers Association). This year’s exhibition considers the wisdom and beauty of these historic trees and will delve into the themes of nature, time and place generated through community meetings and a vote in June 2018. Thirty-five artists’ diverse interpretations will be featured in the show.

  Workshops

Expressive Arts | Mondays, 1 - 3 pm

The Expressive Arts Group began as a program through the West Coast Mental Health Network. There are about 30 participants, who meet on a drop-in basis every Monday afternoon to paint, make collages, use mark-making tools, do print-making and/or sculpture. No previous art experience is necessary to participate in the group. We operate on the belief that engaging in creative activities is physically and emotionally healing. We provide art materials, instruction (if needed and desired) and support in an inclusive, accessible and safe atmosphere. Free.
If you are interested in attending, please call 604-687-2468

Come join author and artist Bruce Ray for the launch of his new book

I Threw a Brick Through a Window

Saturday, September 22nd, 4–6 pm, Gallery Gachet

Bruce Ray's new collection of graphic short stories captures the elemental undercurrents of society and finds vivid expression through humour, compassion, madness, and dark dreams. These non-autobiographical tales find life from Bruce’s experiences as he tells the stories of the struggles and outside forces that influence the lives all around us.

“Take some deep breaths and spend some time witnessing. The neighbourhood is changing, professionals moving in, clinics and counselors setting up shop. The free space of a healing gallery is threatened, so too worlds of expression. Current and potential voices may be lost.”
