Pere Marquette River Conservation Grant

FFI and its Great Lakes Council is proud to award a Conservation Grant to the Pere Marquette Watershed Council, an FFI affiliate club, to assist in the restoration of an eroding railroad right of way bank that will prevent the possible derailment of freight trains carrying caustic chemicals across the mainstream of the Pere Marquette River.

The Pere Marquette is an iconic Michigan blue ribbon trout stream, also designated by the U.S. Forest Service as a Wild and Scenic River, located in northwest Michigan.  If a train accident were to occur at this site, 60 miles of prime river trout habitat would be destroyed.  The project will stabilize the slope of the railroad embankment, minimize sediment loading to the river, and maintain or enhance fish habitat.

FTG Bronze Award Handbook Update
The Fly Tying Group has upgraded the Bronze Award Handbook.  The materials have been reviewed and modified slightly, but the big news is the design.  The new handbook offers the information in a design that is consistent with FFI’s brand standards. Frank Johnson's efforts resulted in the first edition of the awards handbook.  Take a look!

FFI Memorial Fund Recognition
for Frank Johnson
The FFI Memorial Fund was established in 2018 as a way for family and friends to recognize members of FFI.  The fund is used to further the mission of FFI and strengthen the pillars of Conservation, Education and Community. The Fly Tying Group would like to recognize Frank Johnson, a long-time tier, educator, and volunteer of the organization.

How to Take the Perfect Fly Fishing Photo

Take Some Great Shots!

Taking photos is a great way to remember that one truly amazing fish, or how perfect the water was, or to share your day with friends and family. No matter the reason, we want to help you take the perfect fishing photo.

In this article, we provide pieces of advice for two types of shots: the catch and the fly fisher.

Youth Fly Fishing Education Program
The Education Committee is developing a resource in the Learning Center featuring Youth Fly Fishing Education.  The resources will include a profile of the FFI Youth Camp,  guidelines and tips to develop a Youth Fly Fishing Program, and examples of Youth Fly Fishing Education programs among FFI Councils and Clubs.  We are seeking input from our members regarding materials that should be used for this important online resource.  Suggestions and comments should be directed to Dutch Baughman, or Dave Boyer.

As the Education Committee continues to develop high quality materials for the online Learning Center, you can make a difference.  Please consider making a donation to this effort.

Use Your Smart Device to Improve Your Casting
One of the best ways to improve your casting is to watch yourself on a video recording.  The recording features on today’s smartphones and tablet computers produce high quality video images.  On many phones you can use the "Slo Mo” setting while recording for enhanced viewing.  There are free apps available, such as Hudl Technique, that feature slow motion, on-screen angle measurements, and side-by-side viewing capabilities (see picture above).

Casting instructors can use their smartphone or tablet to record their student’s casts for playback and analysis.  Often students will diagnose problems in their own casts without prompting. Comparing "before and after" casts side-by-side on the video screen is rewarding for both the student and the instructor.
