Responsibilities of Elected Southold Town officials

Town Board: The legislative body of the town.  Makes policy by passing town ordinances and resolutions.

Town Clerk: The Town Clerk is responsible for most of the Town records as well as issuing various state and local permits and licenses. The Town Clerk’s Office receives copies of minutes of all department public meetings, as well as the Town Board meetings.

Superintendent of Highways: The Highway Department provides maintenance and improvements to over 200 miles of Town roads in order to  provide safe and convenient movement of traffic, as well as pedestrians.  The Highway Department's responsibilities include maintenance of town equipment, traffic lanes, installation of catch basins for drainage control, installation of Town and street signs, brush and leaf removal, street sweeping, resurfacing and sealing streets, snow removal and ice control. 

Town Trustees:  The Town Trustees  administer all activity within 100 feet of the town’s wetlands and the underwater lands owned by the Trustees for its citizens (also known as “common lands”). They are responsible for the administration of town codes pertaining to boats, docks and wharves, the Town of Southold Coastal Erosion Hazard Area, shellfish and other marine resources, and building or other activities in town wetlands, coastlines and beaches.                                     Facebook
