News from Beit Zatoun

Dear friends of Zatoun and Beit Zatoun,

Entering harvest season as well as holiday

Farmers and growers in Palestine are about to enter into the olive harvest.  This year is one of the "off" or low-yield harvests in the alternate bearing cycle of the olive tree.  Yield is expected to be as low as 30% of a "on" or high yield year.  This can be made worse by growing conditions which included high winds and hail which damaged the blossoms.  In a small country like Palestine, the same weather is experienced in all areas.

This harvest will look very different under Covid - for one it is one more reason to restrict Palestinians' movement to their groves. Just as important, there will be no internationals present to witness or protect the farmers as they face the expected attacks from settlers and army.  Already there is a litany of reporting on the hurdles, attacks and destruction.  The olive harvest is usually the time when Palestinians receive most visitors and feel most supported by the world.  With Covid Palestinians face yet another enemy to sabotage their struggle.

Zatoun will purchase new olive oil at an increased price to help compensate the farmers. This despite falling sales on this continent due to closures of Ten Thousand Villages and lockdown of churches and other gatherings which Zatoun dearly relies on.

Yesterday, a buyer wrote in an email:
"The world is changing; Zatoun oil remains as good as ever!"
More than ever, please support Zatoun with online purchases.

EXCITING news for soap lovers - wait is over - 100% olive oil soap from Palestine has arrived and ready to ship.

The Zatoun community can be very proud of Dimitri Lascaris' run for leadership of the Green Party of Canada and the support it provided.  A great "thank you" for taking up the call to become active on behalf of Dimitri's historic campaign.

Also, thank you to Dimitri for carrying and speaking our hopes with integrity and effectiveness. He was an excellent representative for the grassroots in this country.  The image above which served as slogan for the campaign, is still very much in force and will continue to guide Dimitri.

The loss announced on Oct-03 was heartbreaking especially as Dimitri came so close to winning.   Annamie Paul won only by 150 votes over the "half+1" threshold.  Dimitri did an outstanding job winning over 10,000 GPC members and 10'000s more other Canadians. Wikipedia has a table showing the full results over each of the 8 rounds in ranked ballot or STV method of proportional representation.

We would rather have had a win, but even in this loss, Dimitri has an opportunity to influence GPC policy and beyond.  He did get close to 50% of the vote and 1/3 of membership - so he does have a constituency inside GPC and remains a moral force in the party.  He can continue to be a standard bearer for "eco-socialism" and will serve to strengthen it.

Please stay connected with Dimitri as he continues in Canadian politics.  BREAKING!  Dimitri Lascaris wins favourable decision in Supreme Court of Canada to continue defamation suite against B'nai B'rith.

Closing Nov-03 - sign House of Commons Petition e-2667 calling on the Canadian government to ensure the human rights of Palestinian children are protected by instructing a Special Envoy to promote, monitor and report on the human rights situation of Palestinian children living in the occupied Palestinian Territory and Gaza.  Take 1 minute to sign the e-petition. > To sign

Likely this is the last Zatoun newsletter before the US election on Nov-03.  We can only pray and hope that the political harvest in the US will not be a bitter one.  That the country can begin to find its way back to the family of nations as an equal and not as master.  It is necessary condition if the earth and humankind are to survive.  Make America Great Again is to live out of the principles of justice and equality.  America's greatness will be in joining the world not dominating it.

An eclectic compendium of articles, analyses, etc. on Palestine: Continuing with a new feature called: "The Giving Corner" highlighting organizations, websites, etc. worthy of financial donations.  This month we highlight Foodbenders, a small Toronto sandwich shop which has come under attack by "the combined might of the State of Israel, its international allies (like Donald Trump and numerous Canadian politicians and bureaucrats) and its uncritical and vengeful supporters in the Canadian Israel lobby." From a July statement by Independent Jewish Voices (IJV).  To read entire statement.

Foodbenders is defending itself against a defamation suit for $800,000, as well as 2 cases with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.  An earlier crowdfunding effort was terminated by gofundme.com.  Foodbenders has a new platform to raise funds, please contribute generously to the legal fund to defend Foodbenders.
Please visit our shopping cart.  In GTA, most orders arrive within 2-3 business days.  If you have questions before ordering, send them to info@zatoun.com or you can also call 1-866-294-9729 toll-free.  Also there are many retail storefronts in Kensington-Bloor West area.  Please support them.

In the ups and downs of the journey, we wish love, justice and peace (in that order) to Palestine-Israel and the world.

Best wishes,

p.s. Remember to practice physical distancing not social distancing.

Events and Stuff of Note

NO Physical Events due to Covid-19

Invitation to  Covid is doing huge damage to activism and community organizing against the powers who now have a much freer hand - raising the spectre of Covid to silence people as needed.  Is Covid-19 the second salvo in the "new Pearl Harbor" excuse for ratcheting up the surveillance state? Snowden warns: The surveillance states we’re creating now will outlast the coronavirus. Think Jeff Halper's "Matrix of Control" as developed to oppress Palestine; think "globalized occupation."
