Happy summer to all – boy did it show up suddenly or what!  Along with summer comes vacation time, so I hope you all have a nice getaway planned.  I always like to tell my customers if I’m going to be out for an extended period, but sometimes it’s easy to forget when you’re running out the door that last day before vacation starts.  This quarter’s Spotlight article highlights some important tips to follow before you leave for your trip, so I hope you find them helpful.

Summer is also a great time to think about doing back-ups on your telephone and data systems.  With hurricane season right around the corner, I highly recommend that you have a disaster recovery (DR) plan which includes a back-up of your Exchange Server, if you have one.  There are many ways to back up your data these days, and we can help you with sending your data off-site to a DR facility that is available to you 7/24/365.  When Sandy hit, we saw too many customers with no ability to access their data or get calls, and we’re hoping everyone has learned from that experience and did something to protect your business.  If you’re not sure where to start, don’t hesitate – please give me a call and let’s talk about it.  I can’t stress enough how important this is for your business.

Get to Know Select: Peter Serri, Senior Account Manager

Since June 2005, Senior Account Manager Peter Serri has been helping Select Telecom clients find the right technology solutions to reduce their costs and move their communications systems into the 21st century.

For Peter, the clients are the best part of the day.  “I love meeting people,” he says.  “Select Telecom is known for service, and that’s why I came here.  I love presenting clients with a solution.”

In fact, meeting people is what got Peter into the telecommunications business to begin with.  Peter spent the early part of his career in a variety of fields – paying his way through college as a NYC yellow cab driver, spending 15 years with the NYPD (in Communications, the Youth Gang Squad, and Property Clerk’s Office), and finally a stint being self-employed – before he found his way to the phone business.  And what a story it is!  Continue reading...

Spotlight: 5 Tips for a Productive Summer Vacation

“Productive” may not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of your upcoming summer vacation, but let’s face it: today’s competitive 24/7 marketplace is not exactly conducive to a relaxing stay on the beach.  Most of us simply can’t afford to “turn off” work completely, and even if you’re one of the lucky ones who can, the last thing you want is to come back to an overflowing inbox and irate customers and colleagues who want to know why you haven’t returned their call in seven days.

Thankfully, modern unified communications systems have tools in place to help ease the transition between work and play, and allow you to work effectively (even from the beach!) while you’re away from your desk.  Here are our 5 top tips for making your vacation as productive as it can be:

1. Change Presence.  If your communications system supports a “presence” status, be sure to set expectations with colleagues and managers appropriately by changing your status to “Out of Office” before you go.

2. Update Voice Mail Message.  Update your voice mail greeting to let callers know which dates you’ll be unavailable, when they should expect to hear back from you, and who to contact with any urgent matters while you’re away.  Keep in mind that some systems tie the active voice mail greeting to your presence status, so be sure to update the right message.  (And don’t forget to turn on your email auto-response while you’re at it!)  Continue reading more tips! ...
