Winter 2015

From the President's Desk

Mike Durante, PresidentA belated Happy New Year to all!  Can you believe it’s already the end of January?  Now that the holidays are over and we’re back to full attention on work, let’s talk about starting the new year fresh.  If you’ve seen our website lately, you may have noticed the new Before & After photo page with pictures of some server rooms that we’ve revamped.  Maybe it’s time to make a clean sweep and have us come see how we can improve your server racks and neaten up your data panels.  (Read more in our Spotlight feature below about how we did this for St. Luke’s School as part of a server room move.)  When your equipment and cabling is marked correctly, your IT staff or vendor can find what they’re looking for and troubleshoot faster, and that’s always a good thing!

Part of starting fresh is making sure you’re prepared for anything, so to this end, we recently provided CPR training to many of our employees.  As you’ll see in this issue’s Get to Know Select article, our employees were thrilled with the training provided by Emergency Medicine for Moms.  If your company is interested in doing your own course, we’d definitely recommend working with Stacey, as her course was organized, efficient, and cost effective.  We should all be ready if a medical emergency arises – think of it as DR for life!

Here’s hoping that business is good for all of our clients in 2015.  Many new features are going to be coming out this year for both the NEC and ShoreTel products, as well as our main hosted IP system, ShoreTel Sky, so keep an eye on our website for upcoming events, including informative Lunch & Learns and product refreshers.

As always, I would love to hear from you, so give me a call (914-761-1313) or drop me an email.

Best Always,
Mike Durante

Employee CPR Training

At Select Telecom we believe in being prepared, whether it’s planning for business continuity with a DR (disaster response) plan or educating yourself about emergency preparedness of a more personal nature.  To this end, this past November Select Telecom invited employees to join in for a CPR/First Aid training course hosted by Stacey Cleveland of Emergency Medicine for Moms.

The 3-hour training course covered CPR skills and AED use, choking, and first aid for medical emergencies.  In addition to instructor led discussion, employees were also encouraged to get hands-on experience using the “manikin” dummies to practice their new skills.

The team at Select was impressed with how much they learned in just a quick session.  Though some employees had been trained in CPR in the past, they were surprised at how much had changed in only a few years.  Administrative & HR Assistant Tina DeSalvo reflects, “I used to be a lifeguard about 10 years ago and CPR has changed pretty significantly since then!  I was surprised by the updates and thankful to learn them – the guidelines are much easier now than they used to be.  This class was so enlightening and really made me feel confident that if I am ever faced with an emergency situation, I can help save someone’s life.  That’s a very powerful feeling and I appreciate it.  Stacey was a fantastic teacher with lots of real life examples that will stick with me.” Continue reading...

Spotlight: Complex Server Room Move & Makeover at St. Luke’s School

In the beginning stages of an expansion for its 230 students and 60 staff/faculty, the well-regarded Independent St. Luke’s School (located in NYC’s West Village) learned that it would need to relocate its server room.  Explains IT Coordinator Alfonso Espinal, “We’re erecting a third and fourth floor onto the building, and the architects and engineers had planned to implement an elevator shaft directly through our existing server room.”

Alfonso had an existing relationship with Select Telecom after a 2010 upgrade of the school’s old Nortel system to a VoIP solution from ShoreTel.  In the years since, Alfonso had appreciated the easy administration of the new system, and knew he could count on Select Telecom for reliable service and unmatched expertise.  When he learned of the need to relocate the servers, he didn’t hesitate to reach out to Select Telecom.

As Alfonso recalls, “There was a lot of analyzing to do before we could actually decide where to locate the new server room.”  He spent months going back and forth with the architects, oftentimes calling in Select Telecom for feedback on the discussions.  “They have a lot of experience in building data rooms,” Alfonso explains, “so I valued their opinion on what would be the best solution for us, not only to relocate this summer, but also for the long-term future of the school as we continue to expand our network.”  Continue reading to find out the results of the server room move and makeover...
