A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hej Alla,

Happy Swedish National Day, celebrated on June 6th in Sweden! In order to honor the Swedish holiday here in the U.S., the Swedish Church in LA is celebrating on Sunday June 5th with a short service by pastor Staffan Eklund, lunch served by SWEA-LA and SWEA-Orange County. There will be fun prices to win, the church choir will sing and I myself am honored to hold the Swedish National Day speech followed by everyone singing the Swedish National anthem, “Du Gamla, Du Fria” while we proudly raise the Swedish flag. More information including how to join us on Sunday just below.

While we are on the topic of celebrating Sweden, SACC-LA is the following week on June 14 and 15th hosting "The Swedish Affair Pop-Up LA 2016." The Swedish Affair started in LA 2012 by founding partners, Dataspelsbranschen, Media Evolution and SACC-LA. This year we are doing a Pop-Up version by popular demand, highlighting the creative industries with the theme “The future of technology in the creative spaces”. We are also very excited to welcome Aida Hadzialic, the Swedish Minister for Upper Secondary School, Adult Education and Training, as our Guest of Honor. For all our wonderful SACC-LA members and sponsors we have our Annual Meeting during this affair to thank you for a wonderful year of business and friendship. Due to limited capacity, we can only accommodate a certain number of guests during the first part of this affair but the doors open to everyone at 8 pm on June 14th and we can then mingle with all of you at one of LA’s premier hot spots, Skybar at The Mondrian, while we enjoy one of the most magical views of LA, an art show and live entertainment by Mondrian’s “Tunesday”!!

Celebrate the Swedish National Day on June 5th in LA

The Swedish National Day has been celebrated since 1893. The day originates from "Gustafsdagen", which was a day dedicated to celebrating the anniversary of when Gustaf Vasa became King. Flags were up until then very uncommon on the mainland, and were only used on ships, but became very popular on June 6th. The day was an unofficial national day until 1916, when it was officially established as "The Swedish Flag Day". In 1983, June 6th became the offical "Swedish National Day", and in 2005 it became a national holiday.
Even though Sweden's national day actually occurs on the 6th of June, SACC-LA member The Swedish Church in Los Angeles invites you to celebrate it on June 5th. The day starts with a short family service at 11 am led by pastor Staffan Eklund, followed by lunch in the garden and a celebration of the Swedish National Day! The church choir, led by Mikael Sandgren, is also set to perform during the day. This year's speaker will be Gudrun Giddings, President/Chair of SACC-LA, and the speech will be held in Swedish. Lunch is served and donated by SWEA Los Angeles and SWEA Orange County.

8 Great Bike Rides in Los Angeles

"Los Angeles and the bicycle have somewhat of a love/hate relationship. On one hand, L.A. is perfect for riding; the weather is gorgeous, the city mostly flat, and the places to ride bountiful. On the other, riding a bicycle in L.A. means, almost invariably, riding in stressful traffic. Bike lanes help, protected bike lanes help more, but ultimately it's always nicer to ride without checking over your shoulder every other second.

With that as the preface, all the rides listed below are either entirely car-free, or take place on roads where there is very light traffic. Unless otherwise noted, all of the rides friendly for folks of all fitness levels. They are listed, roughly, in an ascending order of difficulty, from pleasant summer evening spin to a mountainous excursion." via LAist.

With beaches in the summer and ice skating parks in the winter, an archipelago as well as a vibe of a metropol, an impressive startup scene as well as a rich history, Stockholm is indeed a diverse city with seemingly endless possibilities of things to do. Luckily, SACC-LA's sponsor Visit Stockholm can help you navigate through all that Stockholm has to offer so that you can get the most out of your next visit to Stockholm! Everything from what there is to see and do to where you should eat and drink in every part of Stockholm, Visit Stockholm has it!
Stockholm is a great city, but why is it called the Capital of Scandinavia? Well, the reasons are many. Stockholm is the most centrally located and largest city in Scandinavia, the Stockholm region has a population of 3.5 million people and there are 25 institutions of higher education and learning here. In 2010, the EU named Stockholm the first Green Capital of Europe. The Stockholm region has seven ports and five international airports. There is a wide array of arts, culture and a wealth of experiences counted in the number of restaurants, events and concerts, as well as several unique attractions like the Vasa Museum and Fotografiska.

Stockholm's tourism and hospitality industry is thriving and accounts for more than 40% of the industry for all of Scandinavia. Last but not least, Stockholm is known as the place where the Nobel Prize, the Polar Prize, and the Water Prize are awarded. And these are only a few examples of why the statement Stockholm – The Capital of Scandinavia is true.

Besides all of the above reasons why Stockholm is the Capital of Scandinavia, Stockholm is also one of the leading cities in the world within music and tech and home to some of the world’s most successful artists, music producers and music tech startups! Great people and great ideas are everywhere in the world, but it is the environment that creates magic and get ideas to fly. The video below is showing the locations in Stockholm where famous people and gadgets from Stockholm started, as a celebration of this talented group of individuals and their history.
