A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hej Alla,

Happy April 1st and though this is not an April fool's newsletter we have included some pranks and funny hoaxes from around the world. The joke from Sweden is currently placed as number two of “Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes of All Time”. You can click on the link below to find out what happened on April 1st 1962 in Sweden.

Team SACC-LA had the pleasure to screen Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s fist English language feature film “Louder Than Bombs” last week. The film opens in the U.S. next Friday and we are sure Mr. Trier’s already successful career will continue with this fresh but dramatic take on one family’s life in America. This week we have also included some nice photos from our pervious “Happy Hour”, you can win tickets to Newport Beach Film Festival and there is another fun short episode from “Zlatan at Work”.

We recognize and are very grateful that we have so many amazing members and in this week’s “Membership Spotlight” we highlight another successful SACC-LA member; Cabinet Entertainment, a company that does a lot of various things within the film and TV industry but is perhaps best known for their library of the works by American author Robert E. Howard, who wrote many famous books, graphic novels and short stories, one of them being “Conan the Barbarian”.

It's the day not to trust anyone or anything. It's April 1st, the day dedicated to playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The origin of this special day is a bit uncertain, some see it as a celebration related to the turn of seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of the new calendar. Hopefully, it's a fun day with lots of laughs. Here are the Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes of All Time, with a Swedish joke in second place. We also included a link with tips on how to prank your friends. Enjoy!

Joachim Trier's "Louder Than Bombs"

Earlier this week The Orchard and UTA hosted the Los Angeles premiere screening of the movie "Louder Than Bombs" with a following reception. The movie, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne, Amy Ryan, Isabelle Huppert, Rachel Brosnahan and more, will be out in theaters April 8th. SACC-LA was lucky to attend the screening of this incredible movie and meet with the Director Joachim Trier and Swedish Cinematographer Jacob Ihre. When we asked Joachim to sum up how he felt about the movie in one sentence, he said:

"It's amazing working with my dream cast for my first American movie"

In Joachim Trier's first English language feature "Louder than bombs" we get to follow a family coping with the loss of a mother and wife, who died in a car accident two years ago. The oldest son returns home to help his father organize her effects. When the three men are reunited under the same roof again, they are flooded with memories and secrets are unearthed - most notebly the truth behind the mysterious circumstances of the mother's death. Shifting between past and present, and juxtaposing external reality with privileged glimpses into the interior lives of each of its four major characters, "Louder Than Bombs" is a stunningly intimate portrait of parents and children and the many things that tear them apart and bring them together. This movie is a moving portrait of a fractured family starring Jesse Eisenberg, Gabriel Byrne and Isabelle Huppert.

The Orchard will open "Louder Than Bombs" at Laemmle’s Royal Theatre in West Los Angeles and Sundance’s Sunset Cinema in West Hollywood on Friday, April 8th. On Friday, April 15th, the film’s run will expand to include Laemmle’s Playhouse in Pasadena, Laemmle’s Town Center in Encino and Regal’s University Town Center in Irvine. The film will also open in New York on April 8th and continue to rollout nationally.

A Dog and A Coffee Please

Picture Credit: The Dog Cafe / Facebook
The country’s first dog café just opened in Los Angeles! The Dog Cafe is a laid-back coffee shop where you can visit with adoptable dogs, that recently opened its doors and will host an official grand opening on April 7th. You'll be able to order espresso drinks and pourovers—made with beans from Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co., of course—and then visit with the dogs in an adjacent space.

The mission of the café is "to revolutionize dog adoption by reinventing the way people connect with rescues who need homes," according to their website. "The Dog Cafe offers a comfortable and fun space for humans and dogs to hang out with each other, far from the cold, often scary environment of overcrowded shelters, which can provoke fear and aggression in perfectly adoptable pups."

The Dog Cafe is located at 240 N. Virgil, Unit 13, Los Angeles. Hours during the soft opening are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday

Most Luxurious Volvo of all Time is Here

SACC-LA's sponsor Volvo's most luxurious car is here! With a starting price of $104,900, the Volvo XC90 Excellence is the most expensive car the company has put into production. The XC90 Excellence is Volvo's clearest signal that it sees itself as a full-fledged luxury brand. Volvo's new-found luxury tilt veers from the brand's traditional image as an inconspicuous, safe and reliable option for the everyday commute. In recent years, Volvo has steadily moved from the near-luxury space into full-on luxury. As a result, the Swedish brand will now have to contend against stalwarts from Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Jaguar, and Land Rover. Instead of more pragmatic buyers, Volvo's stylish-minded offerings gives the brand access to a whole new group of customers.

"The Volvo XC90 Excellence is a fantastic expanded version of Volvo's idea of luxury. It brings together fantastic materials, uncompromising safety and performance into an amazing package," says Volvo's Lex Kerssemakers.

One of Sweden's biggest business icons, IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad celebrated his 90th birthday on Wednesday March 30th. Ingvar was born in 1926 to a farmer in SmÃ¥land, a poor region in southern Sweden known for its entrepreneurial spirit. Kamprad's ascent to wealth began at the tender age of 17. Backed with modest financial support from his father, Kamprad began selling pens, picture frames, typewriters and other goods, delivering orders on his bicycle. His early success arose from squeezing his prices to undercut more established competitors. He named the fledgling business IKEA, stringing together his initials and those of the Elmtaryd farm where he grew up in the town of Agunnaryd.

Many people know IKEA, but not the man behind the empire. Therefore, just in time for his 90th birthday, The Local has listed some facts about one of the greatest entrepreneurs of our time, Ingvar Kamprad.
