A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hej Alla,

This past week was indeed busy and exciting as the U.S. had their Presidential election Tuesday. No matter your political preference, I hope we all experienced how important it is to vote, stay proactive and involved to have once voice heard, not only on election day but on a daily basis and in everything we take an interest in.

This week we also included a short message on how you can watch “Before the Flood”, a documentary produced by actor Leonardo DiCaprio on climate change, an urgent and vital topic where Sweden is mentioned as one of the leading countries in the world that is producing extraordinarily positive results regarding the environment.

H.M. Queen Silvia of Sweden established Mentor International in 1994 in collaboration with The World Health Organization and this year Mentor Foundation USA is awarding one deserving winner a fantastic visit to YouTube’s studios in Los Angeles, including accommodations. You can find out how to enter the contest and hopefully win the grand prize further down in this week’s Finally Friday.

Team SACC-LA is preparing for our annual Eliason Merit Award and yes, we do have an absolutely fabulous winner for 2016. Veterans Day!

Veterans Day is an American federal holiday celebrated every Nov 11th in honor of military veterans serving the United States Armed Forces. Originally, Veterans Day was called "Armistice Day", and the date was chosen to commemorate the signing of the armistice with Germany that ended hostilities during World War I. At first, the meaning of Armistice Day was in honor of veterans from World War I as well as veterans of past foreign wars. However, with a history of several other wars following after the World War I, the holiday’s name was changed to Veterans Day and today the focus is on all veterans within the U.S.

We had the opportunity to meet Mattias Gunnarsson from SACC-LA member and top accounting firm PwC. Mattias graciously shared some of his experiences of doing business on a global level and some of the differences of how it is to work in the U.S. compared to Sweden.
1.    Mattias, you have worked both in Sweden and the U.S. What is the main difference between the business culture in Sweden and the U.S? In my experience, Swedish businesses are often very flat and consensus driven, whereas U.S organizations tend to be more hierarchical.

2.     What is your favorite part of working and living in LA?  The proximity to various outdoors activities and of course the great weather that allows you to be active and live throughout the year.

3.     What is an important career advise you would give anyone starting a new job? Focus on something you're passionate about, work hard, be a team player and set your goal high.

4.   Mattias, you have worked for such a successful company since many years back, but we are curious what your very first job or perhaps internship was? I did an internship in the finance department of a collection agency headquartered up in the Appalachians in North Carolina.

SACC-LA is very proud to have such a prestigious member as PwC and we much appreciate your time for sharing some of your valuable insights as well as personal views with us. Thank you Mattias!

It's decided: Sweden says No to Fossil Fuel by 2040

Sweden declares to be on target to run entirely on renewable energy by 2040. Already, as much as 57 percent of Sweden’s power last year came from renewables such as hydropower and wind sources, with the remainder coming from nuclear power. Sweden now plans to tap into its "large potential" for onshore wind power, in order to make the country completely fossil-free by 2040 - a goal set by Sweden's prime minister at the UN General Assembly last year. The replacement of the nuclear power is wind power, and Sweden steadily increased its output of wind power and as it becomes more cost efficient.

Let us present SACC-LA sponsor iKandi and the story about how  the candy company iKandi made it all the way from Sweden to America.
It all started in 2008 when the founder and CEO, Neda Zeighami, visited her cousin in Miami. She loved everything about America except for one thing: The candy! It did not taste like the candy back home in Sweden. So she considered the possibility of importing Swedish high premium quality candy to the United States while working as a real estate agent. It took a few years, but in January 2014, iKandi started a collaboration as the first company to import Swedish candy to Los Angeles, with Olsons Scandinavian Deli in Los Angeles (est. 1948). The Swedes were thrilled to have their beloved candy available, especially the salty licorice that is very difficult to find in the U.S.
Since 2014 the company has expanded, and now the candies can be found at several Swedish-influenced stores and coffee shops around Los Angeles, and through their online shops. iKandi’s mission is to bring premium high quality candy to every American nationwide and iKandi’s candy appeals to all ages, genders and backgrounds. Their customers include famous singers, actors and influencers. IKandi is also delivered to numerous shows and special events at entertainment companies, including Fox Studios, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.
