A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hej Alla,

Congratulations to Swedish actress Alicia Vikander for being nominated in the category of best supporting actress for an Academy Award and to the hair and makeup team from Sweden, Love Larson and Eva von Bahr, as they are nominated for “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared”. We also want to say congrats to our Scandinavian neighbors from Denmark and their feature film “A War", that is nominated for best foreign film. The exciting news was announced yesterday in Beverly Hills. The big Oscar Award Ceremony is being held on Sunday February 28th 2016 in Hollywood.

As this is award season and SACC-LA is based in the entertainment capital of the world, there will be lots of emphasis on entertainment in the next few weeks, especially since there are so many talented Swedes and fellow Scandinavians within the creative arts, innovation and entertainment. However, also lots of other news and fun stories as you’ll notice in the newsletter below. For example, this week you can learn how to visit some of the best museums in LA for free. You can also read about SWEA-LA and their fantastic film scholarship and Swedish director Ninja Thyberg, who was awarded the winning price last weekend during the Scandinavian Film Festival in LA.

El Niño Challenges California Drought, a little bit

"A strong El Niño in the Pacific has spurred storms that have soaked California, leading to some improvement at the state’s reservoirs, which stood at 22 to 55 percent of their historical averages on December 31. The Folsom reservoir that supplies Sacramento suburbs, for example, has risen 28.5 feet in the past month. More importantly, the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada, which had reached a 500-year-low, is already 103% of average for this time of year."

Thanks to the raging El Nino, the California drought is really being challenged by the heavy rains coming in over the coast during the last two weeks. However, many things need to happen before the worst recorded drought in the history of California can be considered past. Photo Credit: Mathilda Tennysdotter

Last Sunday, during the Scandinavian Film Festival, SWEA Los Angeles presented their annual film scholarship to the talented Ninja ThybergA graduate in film directing from Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts, Thyberg receives the scholarship for her tremendous talent and previous achievements:

”We are always looking at wonderful talent and dedication. And we’re often seeing great talent at varying levels of development. In the case of Ninja Thyberg we were looking at a rising star who has already been recognized at Cannes, and at the Tribeca Film Festival. Her talent shows drive and individuality and her craft is already fine-tuned to bringing her ideas from the page to the screen. All the applicants show outstanding achievement. But it was clear that this year’s recipient is “a force to be reckoned with” who will spend her time in Los Angles for specialized study, and working on a most interesting feature film project about a Swedish girl working in the Los Angeles porn industry.” - SWEA Los Angeles

SACC-LA member Film Festival Flix is adapting to the changing times by flipping the old distribution model. While distributors have used the internet to attract audiences to theaters, Film Festival Flix uses theatrical openings and monthly nationwide theatrical premiere series to drive audiences to its virtual studio and distribution channels. By operating in this innovative way, viewers can watch films that most likely wouldn't be viewed elsewhere and they can watch as many films as they want, whenever they want.

Following the successful 2015 unveiling of the Mountain & Adventure Film Festival, the first online festival of its kind, Film Festival Flix is excited to launch its 2016 festival, bigger than ever! This year's festival will showcase 68 films on demand over an unprecedented 29 days in February. Like "Netflix" for mountain films, viewers can watch Any film, Any time, on Any device. A global audience can further interact with filmmakers, athletes, conservation experts, and brand partners through live Google Hangout Q&A's, Twitter Chats, and Facebook Q&A sessions. New to 2016, the festival announced the formation of its Athlete Ambassador Council and established partnerships with 15 Non-Profit Organizations. The festival amplifies the films and messages to the world through the internet. The festival will feature 11 categories and all of the submitted films will have chance to be awarded this festival's best film.

Film Festival Flix CEO and festival Founder, Benjamin Oberman stated, "We love going to festivals. But for the select few who have the time and money to attend, we found the average attendee saw 1 to 3 films due to tickets, scheduling, parties, or business complications." Making the festival Online and On Demand gives viewers around the world the opportunity to see every film on their own terms. This gives more exposure to more films, athletes, and brands. The average viewer in the 2015 festival spent 10+ hours watching films. With almost double the content in this year's festival, the festival expects viewers to watch approximately 15 hours during the festival.
