A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hej Alla,
Eurovision has arrived to Stockholm and Sweden, and so has the warm weather. It was reportedly hotter in Sweden's capital than in Los Angeles this past weekend, with 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26 + Celsius). Superstar Justin Timberlake is gearing up to perform at Eurovision’s final contest that takes place in Stockholm tomorrow Saturday, May 14th and airing for the first time in the U.S.

Just below, you can also read about fun places to visit in Stockholm, making the capital a city well worth a visit. Why not go to Stockholm this summer now that SACC-LA member Scandinavian Airlines conveniently flies non-stop between Los Angeles and Stockholm! We had the opportunity to interview SAS’ general manager of the Americas, Max Knagge, when he was in LA for SAS’ big launch in March. You'll find some of his suggestions of places to visit in Sweden and why he also loves LA below.

We warmly welcome new SACC-LA member Il Caffé to LA and to our team. If you are missing Sweden, take a trip to Downtown LA for a “kanelbulle” and some coffee or a great variety of teas, you’ll feel right at “home”. For all the Angelinos that are curious and want to try a Swedish style café, read more about II Caffé under today’s Membership Spotlight.

Interview with SAS' Max Knagge

During SAS' spectacular launch of the non-stop flight between Stockholm and Los Angeles, SACC-LA got to meet and ask a few questions to one of the men behind the success of SAS, Max Knagge, SAS General Manager for the Americas.
For how long have you been working for SAS and what did you do previous to SAS?
I started in 2003 when I was writing my master thesis with SAS as subject matter. After completing a trainee program I then continued working for SAS.

What is the most exciting part of working for SAS?
SAS is constantly changing and evolving. The airline industry has been through a massive change and so has SAS. This dynamic pace keeps you fresh and you learn something new almost every day. Also to be a part of the team here in US and to drive SAS largest long haul expansion is indeed an exciting part.

You’re currently based in New York, what do you consider the biggest difference working in the U.S. compared to Sweden?
In Sweden and Scandinavia SAS is the leading carrier in its home market. Even though we are the leading airline to Scandinavia in the U.S. we are still somewhat of a small fish in a very big pond. This puts us in a totally different market position which I kind of like, being the challenger.

The launch of the new non-stop route Stockholm-Los Angeles was quite spectacular, did it meet your expectations?
I think the launch turned out even better than expected. We had a great response and support from you at SACC-LA and the rest of the community and we felt very welcome.

Do you come to Los Angeles often? What’s your favorite part about Los Angeles?
Not often enough if you ask me. I had not been in LA for many years, but when I returned in connection with our launch, I again realized how much I love it: many different areas with their own characteristics, nice people with a friendly attitude. In addition, you have the nearby mountains and the ocean, so you can’t go wrong. Perhaps we should move our office from New York to L.A…

Where/what place or location in Sweden would you recommend to visit?
My home town Stockholm is of course a must see, and now just one comfortable flight away. If you have more time I would recommend to head up north to “Höga Kusten”, a beautiful area which gives you a great taste of what Swedish nature can offer.

SACC-LA member il Caffè is a stylish coffee bar inside Downtown LA's Acne Studios. Il Caffè, the Swedish coffee chain with four outlets in Stockholm has now found its way to Los Angeles. Michael Backlinder opened up the shop right next to the high-end fashion brand with similar design principles of sheet metal, sweeping lines, modern black leather chairs, and a tidy Scandinavian aesthetic. Backlinder and business partner, Magnus Jökulsson, are friends with Acne’s founders, and moving into the same space turned out to be a perfect fit. "Il Caffè lends Acne a sense of openness and movement, and a respite for the brand’s cult followers who have made the pilgrimage to Downtown", LA Downtowner writes.

Il Caffé moved into the Eastern Columbia Building almost two years ago, and has been one of the many bricks that’s helped the Broadway district start to cling back together again, in large part because it’s not like anything else Downtown already has. Backlinder describes il Caffé as Swedish, with an Italian sensibility and a pro-downtown agenda. Aesthetically, the space boasts the Scandinavian brand of simplicity — clean, practical, comfortable, and Acne next door lends an upscale vibe.

"Virtually everything comes from Downtown merchants — the coffee is roasted at the nearby Stumptown, Bread Lounge supplies the loaves for the paninis, and the raw juice is locally pressed. The already-famous cinnamon and cardamom buns are homemade by a local (secret) pastry wizard. On mornings the shop does a $10 breakfast special, which includes a three item combination of either coffee, orange juice, fruit, a breakfast Panini, or a pastry, This could possibly be the best easy breakfast around. There’s nothing self-conscious or contrived about the menu, just good food and good coffee, and a nice place to enjoy it all." LA Downtowner writes.
