A Word From the President

Gudrun Giddings

Hi Alla,

Happy September and Labor Day weekend!

Today we give you a short preview of some of our upcoming events this fall. We'll host an exclusive screening weekend in October of all the Nordic Countries’ entry films to the Oscar and Golden Globe awards, last week of October we have a star studded one-day summit on gender equality with Sweden taking center stage and of course our annual glamorous Eliason Merit Award show in November. We are also doing some fun Young Professional events and is working on a few more exciting collaborations that will be announced shortly. Yes, it’s going to be a busy but exciting and fun fall season thanks to that Sweden and all our extraordinarily talented neighboring Nordic countries is still trending high and “everything Nordic” is in top demand.

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets.”  - Golden Rule

     Happy Friday!

Labor day 101

What is Labor Day?

Photo credit: Shorpy, Detroit Publishing Company

In 1882 the Knights of Labor foundated the American Labor Day to be on the first Monday of September. Labor Day is equivalent to the international worker's day which is celebrated in most countries around the world at the 1st of May each year.

The meaning of Labor Day is the same today as it was in 1882, but is celebrated differently today.

How do we celebrate Labor Day?

Union men and women was partaking in the holiday with parades and rallys and fighting for an eight-hour day, better wages and to prohibit child labor.

Now we celebrate the "unofficial end of the summer" by doing whatever we like - or nothing. Going to the beach, barbecue, throwing a party or just wind down with family and friends.

What do we wear on Labor Day?

Last day to wear white! Why? In order to tell old money from nouveau riche in the 1880's, the women of the respected ”old money” families set multiple fashion rules to distinguish what women was worth spending time talking to, and those who were not. Not wearing white after Labor Day was such a rule. Another possible reason is that the approaching rainy season would wet and mud stain your white trousers, or possibly that in the winter the air was filled with coal dust due to the coal heating of the buildings, and inevitably would stain the white trousers and therefore wearing darker colors was preferred.

Last day to wear white! A member of the nouveau riche? Heating your house with coal? Here in Los Angeles you should not be worried of getting your white trousers wet and muddy from the rain. Nowadays there are few actual reasons to not wear white after Labor Day. Except from keeping a very old and somewhat amusing tradition alive. So we suggest you put on your nicest white garment, pair it with a bathing suit and sunglasses - and enjoy the "unofficial last day of summer"!

Happy Labor Day weekend!

Swedish food: Fermented Herring

"Americans Try Surströmming (The Smelliest Food In The World)" from BuzzFeedVideo
(click on the picture to start the clip)
Surströmming, known as Fermented (Baltic) Herring, is a traditional Swedish dish. Surströmming is sold in cans, and when opened, the contents release a strong and overwhelming smell. This is the reason why the dish is most often eaten outdoors. As with crayfish, the season for surströmming has its premiere in Sweden in August. The traditional dish is best enjoyed with potatoes, flat bread and butter. To get a real picture of the very special smell and taste of the fermented herring, watch the video above!
