Free Outdoor Screening of OLD SOUTH documentary with Q&A to follow in downtown Greensboro

[Greensboro, NC] - On Saturday, July 25th at 9pm, Elsewhere will host a free outdoor screening of Danielle Beverly's OLD SOUTH in the grassy lot at the corner of Arlington Street and Bragg Street, in Greensboro’s historic Old Asheboro neighborhood.

The documentary follows the story of Hope, a 30-year-old woman fighting to save her historic African American neighborhood from encroachment by an elite white college fraternity, one known to fly a confederate flag and hold an annual antebellum parade. On one block in Athens, GA two communities steeped in history - one black, one white - strive to keep their respective legacies relevant in a changing American South. OLD SOUTH provides, through a quiet unfolding story, a window into the underlying dynamics of race relations that influence so many American communities. And ultimately inspires hope, reflection, and crucial steps forward.

The film screening is followed by an open conversation and Q&A session with the film's Director and staff from the International Civil Rights Center & Museum about how America’s legacy of racism has impacted the formation of our communities and lived experiences, as well as about how we might re-imagine how communities can thrive.

Duke Professor in Documentary Studies at Duke University, Marco Williams says OLD SOUTH,  â€œOffers an intimate portrait of the dividing lines between white fraternities and black communities. This film captures an unexpected, but not surprising prospective solution for bridging said divide...Important not to only harp on problems, but to navigate our way to solutions."

This event is part of Elsewhere’s South Elm Projects initiative, which promotes neighborhood-driven community revitalization through artist-led projects and public programming amidst the neighborhood’s current redevelopment.

Director Danielle Beverly brings this film to Greensboro as the final stop on the “Healing Spaces Tour,” which has taken OLD SOUTH to screening venues throughout the Southeast. The tour is funded by Wave Farm & NYSCA.
