1. â€‹â€œI wish. . .” was an open ended question posed by Minneapolis-based storefront artist  Joan Vorderbruggen to Elsewhere visitors and passing pedestrians during downtown Greensboro’s “First Friday” on May 3rd, 2013. Participants were asked to share a wish on a small sheet of paper with the simple prompt, “I wish. . .” Twenty one wishes were selected from hundreds gleaned that evening. Those few were then transcribed to fabric, and embroidered in each authors own hand and finally embellished with more than a thousand Swarovski crystals. The resulting work of up-cycled textile art is both a functioning drape for Elsewhere’s “StoryBank” booth and a public intervention that presents an opportunity for pedestrians, residents, and visitors to ponder and connect with one another via the spirit of a wish.
Elsewhere is an artist-run, non-profit contemporary art organization, set in a former thrift store in downtown Greensboro, NC. Utilizing the massive 58-year inventory, Elsewhere’s environment of art and everyday objects invokes new modes for creative response, living, doing, and exchanging in our downtown neighborhood and across the world.
Elsewhere is funded in part by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, The National Endowment for the Arts, The North Carolina Arts Council, the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, the Future Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, the Kresge Foundation, Tannenbaum Sternberger Foundation, Guilford Green Foundation, the Harpo Foundation & friends like you.
