Tips from the locals

Check the forecast. Embrace the darkness. Layer up!

1. If you're serious about seeing the northern lights you should visit Iceland when it‘s statistically darkest and clearest. The nights are nice and long from November to February and of those four months, December and February are on average slightly less cloudy. Check out the Icelandic Met Office for a live aurora forecast.

2. Stay warm! The more layers you wear, the longer you'll be able to comfortably stay outside waiting for and watching the spectacle in the sky. And remember that clear nights tend to be cold nights.

3. Feel free to drive your own rental car in search of the aurora. Make a road trip of it! Organised tours however, use technology and mountains of experience to go to the right place at the right time for a sighting. Some nights the northern lights are everywhere, but other nights the guides really earn their keep.

4. If you take a northern lights tour, be sure to take it early during your trip. That way if you don't see anything, you'll have time to take the tour again for free.

5. For the best results, stimulate all four main senses at the same time. Find a quiet natural hot pot to bathe in while looking up at the northern lights, sipping hot cocoa whilst listening to suitably relaxing Icelandic music. Now, that's what we're talking about.

Enjoy the northern lights in Iceland
The Northern Lights Tour in Iceland takes you to see a spectacular natural phenomenon which happens during the winter months. The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the upper atmosphere near the North Pole. Northern lights in Iceland are visible during the winter months, from September to April. On our WOW air tour and activities page you can find various northern lights tours that we recommend.
