FRANÇOIS-XAVIER MARANGE. Du maître à l'artiste

Pour l'occasion, accrochage d'œuvres de François-Xavier Marange en salle 2,
du 7 au 11 avril 2015.

Cet ouvrage se penche sur le travail et le parcours du peintre François-Xavier Marange, décédé en 2012.

François-Xavier Marange est né à Dreux en 1948. À l’âge de 14 ans, il intègre l’un des plus importants ateliers de gravure de Paris : l’atelier Georges Leblanc. Aux côtés de son maître Paul Decottignies (1936-2000), il entame l’apprentissage de la taille-douce et de l’impression, un métier rare.

Devenu maître-imprimeur et taille-doucier, Marange travaille, de 1973 à 1982, aux ateliers Lacourière-Frélaut et chez Maeght, où il imprime les plus grands artistes de son temps : Antoni Tàpies, Joan Miró, Zao Wou-Ki et d’autres encore. Chez Lacourière-Frélaut, Marange se lie d’amitié avec l’artiste québécois Louis-Pierre Bougie, lequel l’invite à s’établir au Québec. Bougie l’amène au grand atelier de la rue Dowd, à Montréal, et le présente à un groupe d’artistes réunis autour d’une vieille presse. Tranquillement, l’atelier s’organise autour de l’expertise unique de Marange. Le souhait de former un collectif qui œuvre dans un esprit coopératif apparaît. L’Atelier Circulaire est fondé le 21 décembre 1982.

Bien qu’il consacre une grande partie de son temps à son métier, depuis toujours, Marange peint. À la fin des années 1980, Marange arrive à mener de front les deux pratiques qui composent son univers artistique : celle du maître qui transmet son savoir à l’atelier et celle du peintre dont la démarche exige la solitude.

FRANÇOIS-XAVIER MARANGE. From master printer to artist

An exhibition of François-Xavier Marange works will be held for the occasion, in room 2,
from April 7 to 11, 2015.

This monograph highlights François-Xavier Marange's (1948-2012) artworks and carreer.

Born in Dreux in 1948, François-Xavier Marange arrived in Paris in 1962. To get away from school, he knocked on the door of one of the largest printmaking studios in Paris : the Atelier Georges Leblanc. With his mentor Paul Decottignies (1936-2000), he began learning intaglio and printing, a five-century-old tradition.

Marange became a master printer specializing in intaglio and worked from 1973 to 1982 at the Lacourière-Frélaut and Maeght studios, where he continued to print the most renowned artists of his time: Antoni Tàpies, Joan Miró, and Zao Wou-Ki among others. It was at Lacourière-Frélaut that Marange made friends with Quebec artist Louis-Pierre Bougie, who invited him to take up residence in Quebec. At the end of the summer of 1982, Bougie took him to the large Dowd Street studio, in Montreal, where artists had congregated around an old press. In a calm atmosphere, the studio revolved around Marange’s expertise. A desire was felt to form a collective that would work in a cooperative spirit. Atelier Circulaire was founded on 21 December 1982.

Although he spent a great deal of his time working at his craft, Marange had always painted. In the late 1980s, Marange managed to maintain simultaneously the two practices that made up his artistic life: as a master craftsman who transmitted his knowledge in the studio and a painter, whose art required solitude.
