APN E Newsletter is now PUBLIC!

This newsletter is an exciting one because Alberta Playwrights' Network has decided to open up its E News to those beyond our membership base. In an effort to become more prevalent with greater reach to all of Alberta, we encourage you to pass along the good news and get others to sign up for this E Newsletter on our website!

This past month has been a busy one for APN! We launched our NEW WEBSITE, membership renewals were due at the end of this month for many members, and 2016 programming is getting well underway. WORDSHED submission deadlines are set (see right-hand column), ACT ONE plays are being reviewed by our dramaturgical committee and
APN finalized the 2015 PLAY CATALOGUE with APN members' latest and greatest plays and sent it out to over 60 theatres across Canada. APN has also made changes to the ALBERTA PLAYWRITING COMPETITION (See note below) including new rules and regulations which can be found on our website.

A Note From Our President

In 2015-2016, not only do we celebrate the 30th anniversary of APN, but we are also entering the 50th year of the Alberta Playwriting Competition (APC). The longest running playwriting competition in Canada, with the largest cash prize, the APC has been one of our flagship programs since APN’s beginnings. To celebrate this occasion, we have planned some changes to the competition in order to raise its profile, and the profile of Alberta Playwrights in Canada:

  1. APC jury will award just one prize of the full $5000.00 to a single writer.
  2. A short-list of 5 finalists will be announced in advance of the winner. This will align the APC with similar large writing awards.
  3. There will no longer be a cash “Discovery Prize”.
  4. There will be a discretionary jury prize known as the “Noviciate Prize" for the outstanding work of an un-produced playwright.
  5. This "Noviciate Prize", consisting of APN programs and services is meant to demonstrate our continuing commitment to developing playwrights of all stages.

For a complete explanation for these changes visit our website here.

We hope to see all your entries on March 31st, 2016.

– Neil Fleming, President, APN

Submit Application for Playwriting Program
YOUth RIOT 2016

Third Street Theatre and Alberta Playwrights' Network

The Program: Over the course of 3 months, Third Street Theatre, APN, and guest artists will facilitate a playwriting program for Queer teens, helping them tell their stories through the medium of 10 minute plays. This is a hybrid playwriting and workshop-based program, where industry professionals lead workshops aimed at mentoring program participants and playwriting skills are built up around these sessions. The program is designed to ignite creativity in teens with or without experience in playwriting, and most importantly, provides valuable tools to foster confidence, acceptance, and positive self-image.

The program finishes with a public festival of short plays written by the participants and staged by professional actors and directors from the theatre community.

SCRIPT SALON (On Sunday February 7)
Public Play Reading
is proud to present a reading of the extraordinary 2015 winner of the Alberta Playwriting Competition: Ken Cameron’s THE BLOGFATHER.

THE STORY: Invited to act as a judge at an Iranian Arts festival, a naive Canadian playwright (Chris Craddock) finds himself ill-equipped to navigate the crushing politics and subtle rebellion at the heart of Iranian society. But when he encounters a young Iranian/Canadian blogger who has incurred the anger of the state (Jeff Halaby), the playwright sees first hand the courage and consequences of expressing free speech in a totalitarian nation. THE BLOGFATHER is an unexpectedly theatrical and affecting tribute based on playwright Ken Cameron’s personal experiences in Iran.

The play is read by Chris Craddock, Jeff Halaby and Roya Yazdenmehr.

Sunday February 7 at 7:30 in the Upper Arts Space at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (10037 84 Avenue).
