Kochevar Claims 2014 Patriot All-America

Kyle Kochevar, a junior from the University of Virginia, shot 2-under 68 in the final round of the Patriot All-America on a very cold, rainy day at The Wigwam Arizona. This put him in a tie for the lead with University of Arizona freshman George Cunningham who shot a final round 66.

The playoff was played on the18th hole. Both golfers lipped out birdie putts on the first playoff hole. Cunningham tapped in for par and Kochevar sunk a 2 1/2 footer. They went back to the 18th tee. Rules Trivia

Q: A player, believing his original ball might be out of bounds, played a provisional ball which came to rest short of where the original ball came to rest. He walked forward, saw his original ball and, believing it was in bounds, picked up the provisional ball. He then discovered that the original ball was out of bounds. What is the ruling?

Trivia answer: Since the original ball was out of bounds, the provisional ball was in play. When the player lifted the ball in play without authority under the Rules, he incurred a penalty stroke and was required to replace it under Rule 18-2a (Decision 27-2b/8)
