Downtown, Warehouse District Getting New Apartments

Two new apartment projects are nearing completion, one downtown and one in the city's popular warehouse district. Steuben Place Apartments, a 29-unit project at 40 Steuben Place in downtown Albany, will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 26. Learn more.

100 'Walk Your City' Smart Signs Unveiled

A Heritage Tourism Working Group's walkable city signage was unveiled last week after 100 signs encouraging residents, employees, and visitors to take a walk and get to know Albany. The "smart" signs are at 16 intersections and direct pedestrians to 50 points of interest. Learn more

Zamboni Race Between McCoy, Sheehan Wednesday

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan will go head-to-head in the first ever Albany Devils Zamboni Race; the event marks the start of the Devils season and the Cash for Coats/Katie's Koats Fund Drives. Open to the public, the competition will take place tomorrow, October 21 at 1:30 PM on South Pearl Street in front of the Times Union Center. Learn more.
 

Rising Star Finalists Name for Wine & Dine Festival

The Wine and Dine for the Arts Festival organizers announced last week the up and coming chefs from 10 restaurants who were named finalists in the Rising Star Chefs part of the annual event. Downtown eateries included in the finalists are Angelo's 677 Prime, Dali Mamma, The Hollow Bar + Kitchen, and Soul Kitchen. Read more.
 

Chili Cook-off This Thursday

The American Heart Association is hosting a chili cook-off at The State Room, 100 State Street, this Thursday, October 22, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Called "It's Getting Chili Out," guest chefs will be featured and a $25 donation is the suggested donation. Learn more.
 

Downtown Retailer Planning Youth Trip

The owners of Downtown shop Fashions Unique, located in the Coliseum Mall at 153 S Pearl Street, are holding a trip to take Albany youth to the Hayden Planetarium and Museum of Natural History, and have set up a fundraiser to help with the costs. Learn more.
 

Berkshire Bank Foundation Awards Over $20,000

Berkshire Bank Foundation announced last week that it has awarded $20,845 in grants and pledges to 11 non-profit organizations in the greater Capital District during their third quarter grants cycle. Organizations which received funds include Equinox, Inc., and Community Loan Fund of the Capital Region. Albany County's Live Life Local

Saturday, October 24th from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Albany County Executive Dan  McCoy and a host of supporting partners will showcase local Capital Region businesses that are living “green” and working hard to reduce, reuse and recycle. This jointly-hosted event will celebrate Guilderland Central School District’s 10th community recycling and re-use extravaganza! Since its inception in April of 2011, Guilderland Schools have collected (on average) over 70,000 pounds of recyclable and re-usable goods at each event. This is a tremendous reduction in the carbon-footprint of the community. This FREE to the public event will highlight many unique and special environmentally friendly businesses, offer educational presentations and host a recycling event in conjunction with the Guilderland Central School District.
