SNOW SHOVELLING SAFETY

Living in Canada and parts of the United States means that many of us are no strangers to shovelling snow. Like most other labour intensive jobs, snow shovelling comes with a risk for injury. Most injuries sustained while shovelling snow are related to the musculoskeletal system which means they can be prevented. This article outlines how the MoveSafe principles can be adapted to create the perfect snow shovelling technique to keep your back healthy and strong. We also created a personal checklist that you can keep for reference whether you are shovelling at home or at work.

USE THE MOVESAFE PRINCIPLES FOR YOUR WINTER ACTIVITIES
Despite the cold weather, there are many fun activities to be enjoyed during the winter season. While you do, remember to use the MoveSafe principles to take care of your body:

Prepare and Maintain the Body

  • Take the time to Warm-Up your body before heading out skiing, tobogganing or snowshoeing.
  • If you are out ice fishing take Movement Breaks to interrupt your static posture and restore blood flow, it will help keep you warm!
  • If you are curled up in front of the fire having a festive movie marathon, remember to take Interrupt breaks and perform a few overhead reaches to help decompress your spine.

Prepare Work Area, Tools and Equipment

  • When wrapping your gifts position them on the table instead of the floor to reduce hunching.
  • When decorating the tree, keep a step stool handy to help reach the tall branches and reduce the amount of time you spend with your arms overhead.

Perform Healthy Postures and Movements

  • Make sure you Hinge at the Hips when retrieving the mountain of packages Amazon left on your doorstep from your online Holiday shopping!
  • Establish a Wide Stable Base when strapping on your skates, ski boots and snowshoes by kneeling down onto one knee instead of bending forward with a C-shaped spine.
  • When baking up a batch of cookies for Santa, hold your mixing utensil with your palms facing in instead of facing out to keep your Shoulders Anchored in a neutral position.

From the MoveSafe family to yours, we want to wish you a safe and healthy holiday season.

Happy Holidays!
